I think I found a picture of the OP's nemesis:
quote:I second these traps. Had rats in the attic at one point and bought a 9 pack from Amazon. Only put out 2 traps with peanut butter and waited a day or two. Went back to check and, success. Couple tips, do not touch the traps with your hands when you set them (use gloves), they will smell the human smell on the trap and not go to it. Conversely, if you catch a rat in a trap, reuse it. The rat scent will attract other rats to it if there are any more.
What got mine was the Victor rat traps with the yellow plastic set tab, not the metal tab. Our pest control guy said the metal tab ones don't work well. When I switched to the yellow ones I nailed every rat that was coming around....and took out a possum as well. Poor guy. Make sure the bait side is up against a wall so the rat has to come at it from the side.
I still have a box of the traps. I'll mail some to you if you want. I bought a case of them.

They always ran along the same wall that shot straight outside. Another person would wait, out of sight, with their weapon of choice just outside the door and bludgeon the rats to hell. I got pretty good with an old Callaway Big Bertha driver.

I do know there is research going on in New Orleans because there seems to be a growing segment of the rat population that is resistant to the poison.
quote:I have also had good success with the Tomcat trap when other traps failed to get the job done.
This is what finally caught the one in my garage. I baited it with dog food covered in peanut butter. The way the trap is set up the food sits in the middle of the trigger in a small tube.
It is the Tomcat Rat Traps you can get them at Walmart.![]()

Cats are the best! I'm not a cat person; but my girls, and wife wanted 1 or 2 when we bought our place in the country. We had some field mice in the house, and we couldn't get one of them caught. I absolutely despise a dang mouse or rat! I told my wife to keep the cat inside one night, and he took care of it for me. I love those cats!! They stay inside one or two nights per week now, just to keep us safe

You want to make sure he dies somewhere you can throw him away - otherwise you get the joy of trying to find where the horrible odor is coming from.
