Watching it right now. Anyone else's eyes get a little wet every time Gus dies or is that just me.
A show that is better every time you see it.

"Well, Augustus is dead. Died from blood poisonin' from them arrows them Indians shot in him. They cut off one of his legs, but the poison got in the other and he wouldn't let 'em cut it off. Stubborn about it; that's what killed him, bein' stubborn."

For any lover of the tv series, read the book. There are so many details that still couldn't fit in the 8hr show

If yall are fans of Lonesome Dove, then you should read "Streets of Laredo" by McMurtry, one of my favorite books ever.

I know for a fact I couldn't handle Bonfire anniversary night and Lonesome Dove at the same time.

If you enjoy the fiction, you'd probably enjoy the true story. The death of Loving (Gus) is told on pages 162 to 183.

I always found Streets of Laredo and Dead Man's Walk lacking when compared to Lonseome Dove, and there are a few conflicting details.

Not surprising though - when you lead off with a grand slam, the follow up home run just doeant have as much oomph.

I still need to read Comanche Moon to finish the series.

I think the best acting in that movie, is when Gus is reading Deets' epitaph and trying to hold back tears.

There are so many pearls of wisdom in that movie.

"Yesterday is gone, we can't get it back."

"The best thing you can do about death is ride off from it."

My favorite hands down. When I was a little kid that is one of my favorite memories, going to my grandparents I would watch it there. They had taped it when it was aired originally.

Lonesome Dove is very dear to my heart. Several family members went up the "trail". I was fortunate to know some of them personally and hear some of their stories first hand. My great-grandfather drove cattle to Kansas and then to Montana. My great-great grandmother drove her buggy from Williamson County to Abilene, Kansas with her husband. Oh, and she was pregnant. I heard many stories about the weather, Indians, and rustlers. My "uncle Jim" looked, dressed and lived much like Gus. He came back from a trail drivers reunion in San Antonio with a black eye Dom fighting. He was close to 90 at the time. Great book and movie!

I read the book when it came out & it has been one of my favorites ever since. There is more in the book than there is in the mini-series, but the TV version is great as well. I think one of my favorite lines belongs to Woodrow and goes something like "I'd like to see the herd that you and Jake could gather...a herd of wh*res...maybe."

My favorite Western....Guaranteed to be quoted at all of our family gatherings. And I still get a little teary eyed when Deets and Gus die

"My God, Woodrow. It's been quite a party ain't it?"

"The Ladder of Rivers" is the story of my ancestors, the Olive Brothers, that ran cattle from central Texas (Williamson County) up to Nebraska and Kansas. Lots of Indians, rustlers and family feuds.

I grew up, and now live there again, in Archer City. You used to see, from time to time, Larry McMurtry walk back and forth with a load of books from book store to book store. I guess he is too old for that now. There is only one book store left, and I think he sold his house by the golf course.

Here is August. Called Gus. 3 weeks old yesterday. Not saying Lonesome Dove was the sole reason behind his name, but it (book and film) is a favorite of both my wife and mine.
