My old man got a glock 42 for his birthday. He wants to pocket carry. What's the best holster on the market?

It's a tad large for some pockets. For mine, I also use the smallest Versacarry -- either in waistband or in my boots.

I've got a 43. It will work in the pocket, but for shorts, cargo pockets are preferable.

I have the DeSantis Nemisis holster. Its a little on the big side, but they make other sizes I need to try. Uncle Mikes, I think, makes one that stays in the pocket pretty well.

I don't have a G42, but Hickok45 has become somewhat famous for his online reviews. He is very supportive of Alabama Holsters for their front pocket holster for the G43. I would have to think that the smaller G42 model would work well. Note that this is a Kydex holster.

Also, some people swear by Remora. This is a synthetic holster which not only can be a pocket holster, but can also be used as an IWB holster with no strap or clip (well, they do have one with or without (it stays in place due to friction without). An added benefit is you can also get Remora's spare magazine holder (they also make something similar for flashlights), which is also designed to be carried in the pocket, staying secure due to friction, or worn IWB through friction.
