So the neighborhood lakes where I live are pretty infested with Muscovy ducks. We've been trying to get rid of them and the HOA even paid a guy on a per duck basis to remove a bunch but he didn't really do much.

We're talking more extreme measures now- so would a pellet gun shooting an 8gr .177cal pellet at 1200fps be enough to quickly kill a good size Muscovy with a head shot?

yes, but it'd have to be square in the noggin.

I like where your head is at but there would be real concerns about shots carrying through/past a duck and causing harm to people and property.

Worst you're gonna get with a pellet gun is a busted window.

Shoot down from a tree....geez. Any missed shots go into the dirt.

Yep, a pellet gun with good pellets will knock them down. Head or neck shots though. A body shot probably would, but it would take a while and you'd have a wounded duck making all kinds of racket.

Shotgun with suppressor. They won't damage any property. Could You trap them in a hog trap wrapped in chicken wire?

Sounds like great opportunities! Invite your local Vietnamese over. Not only will you not have any more ducks but all the fish will be out of the ponds as well

Rocket-nets.

Seriously, not only will this be an excellent time, you'll get em good.

Also, try a bag of wonderbread and a 7 iron.

I see people feeding these ducks all the time out on WLH. Can't they be poisoned? Or given a sedative and relocated to Duessen Park under the cover of darkness? Maybe send them across BW8 to the wetlands area?

Make sure ALL feeding is stopped for at least 2 weeks, then rounding them up for removal is much easier. Don't relocate, have them put down (unless someone volunteers to take all to their own private property).

Don't hide whatever decision is made.

Yeah, we're trying to get people to stop feeding them but it doesn't really work. And as I understand it, since they're considered invasive they have to be destroyed once removed.

Keep in mind that the same sort of folks who forced the Grand Lakes HOA out in Katy to stop killing the invasive ducks live in my neighborhood too. I mean one lady seriously wanted to know why we couldn't use an invisible fence to keep a 4' alligator from leaving one of the small ponds in our neighborhood and "terrorizing the neighborhood."

Can't wait til you head shoot one of those things and he starts flopping around and your neighbor comes out screaming!

I'll just catch a rat snake and stick it on their porch and they'll scream "COTTONMOUTH!"

Of course, yesterday some lady posted a pic of a juvenile cottonmouth that was in her pool and one of the resident busybody hens who is always griping at people for killing non-venomous snakes tried to tell the lady it was a rat snake.

Here's the pic- if you can't tell that's a juvenile cottonmouth instantly you need to not mess with snakes.

I was thinking the same thing as NW80. The first one you shoot is going to quack and flop around like crazy. Your yuppie neighbor is going to witness this and all hell is going to break loose with a video and/or picture of the incident being blasted all over social media. Good luck in your endeavor,

Eh, not really worried about it. I'm already a snarky a-hole to the pearl-clutching bitties and the hen-pecked eunuchs married to them.

There's enough rednecks running around the neighborhood it shouldn't cause too much of a stink.

Seriously. No feeding for 2 weeks, and big dip nets. It is easy.

Lakes & Ponds = Ducks

I live in Gleannloch Farms and some idiot homeowners pushed the HOA to spend something like $1200 for a company to remove a bunch of Muscovy Ducks. I was one of the few who spoke up and said it was a total waste of money because ducks fly.

Wellwithin a month of relocation we had just as many as before.

Like Ursus said, stop feeding them and their numbers will at least go down, but you'll NEVER get rid of them.

There are some decently powerful air guns these days - someone posted a 45 caliber one with about the same power as a cowboy load 45LC - plenty for a duck.

Might ruin some meat, but I'm guessing you have plenty to dispose of.

These intersections of wildlife and city people are always highly amusing. Please post what your "final solution" is and video any meltdowns by your neighbors.

Wait till November and then sell day hunts to offset the HOA fees. If you feed them bread and corn they may not taste to bad come duck season.

Or trap them all and maybe the eyeguy can make a texian firearms duck sausage

I also make sure to run a few over throughout the year. I've never seen anyone but myself not break for them, then again I'm also that ahole neighbor....

There is a big goose in my mothers neighborhood. Her name is Lucy and she is dumb as a post, walks down the streets and such. People go nuts about this damn duck. They also feed the feral cats.

Someone started doing this in my townhouse complex. It had some interesting unintended side effects.

At least 15 individual cats started hanging around that townhouse day and night.

A family of possums started coming around.

A family of coons chewed through a neighbor's eaves and took up residence in their attic. It was funning watching the fat asses shimmy down a vertical gutter in the evenings to go feed.

Luckily the person was reasonable when talked to and appears to have stopped feeding the wildlife.

This is inside 610 in Houston. We also have a small herd of cotton tails that graze around the grounds in the early morning.

Kosher status[edit]
As noted above, the Kosher status of the Muscovy duck has been a matter of dispute among deciders of Jewish Law (poskim) in previous generations. Although some consider the Muscovy duck to be non-kosher,[note 2][note 3] others continue to disagree.
In 2008, a "Mesora Dinner" was held to reaffirm the kosher status of various species, and Muscovy duck was on the menu. In discussing the halachic issues surrounding the species' kosher status, it was noted that the Muscovy duck was "highly controversial, due to its ban in America by the acerbic Rabbi Bernard Illowy in the mid-1800s. As such, it is still not recognized as kosher in the [United] States today, but in Israel, no such ban ever existed."[30
Per Wikipedia.... so there's that. You could ship them to Israel...

What negative effect do those ducks have? We have a few starting to show up in my neighborhood. Might need to talk to my neighbor who runs our HOA.

They crap all over everything, feathers are everywhere, the quality of the water generally goes down as a result of the massive amount of duck ****, they can be noisy, sometimes aggressive when they think every single person is there to feed them dinner, etc.
