Anyone have any advice/tips for hunting these guys? We've been drawn for Mason Mountain management hunt. Been doing Google search on shot placement, etc, but wondered if anyone had any experience hunting Oryx.
Also, if by chance we actually put one down, what to do with all of the meat?

KEEP THE MEAT!!! Its good stuff! Shot placement isn't much different than whitetail but I'm sure you have found a good diagram on location of vitals.

Killed one 3/2014 in West Texas. They're not quite as big as a cow Elk. Really good to eat! Like anything else, just shoot it in the shoulder.
Don't know where you drew; but, if it's New Mexico you better fill your tag! If not you won't get another chance!

Hunted Mason Mountian about 16 years ago on a doe/spike hunt. Beautiful place. Could've killed a gemsbok, axis, oryx, and about a 150" whitetail. But I only ended up shooting a doe.

Never shot one myself but I've guided dozens of kills of Oryx and Gemsbok. Shoulder shot is fine as already noted. Especially if you are shooting a larger magnum round. Otherwise, go slightly behind the shoulder and slightly lower.

And yeah the meat is good.

Congrats on the draw.

Thanks! Excited for the opportunity since I've only had the chance at whitetail for usual hunting. Even if we don't get to shoot one (limited to malformed/broken horn), it will be a fun time.
Any ideas on meat prep other than the typical whitetail sausage/steak?

Eat at the square plate cafe in Mason.

DO NOT "F IT UP" by making sausage!

If you want to redneck it up, then go shoot a goat or hog!

Do cutlets, backstraps , etc. If you want to make burger out of the trimmings. I promise you it is better than Axis!

Try to shoot directly on the shoulder - not slightly behind. All of my African PHs have emphasized that knowing that most of us Americans were trained to aim slightly behind. The primary reason is organ placement. The organs of most African antelopes are "pushed forward" ~6 inches relative to North American deer species. As such, a vital shot is directly behind the shoulder. The other advantage is the immobility that shot provides by breaking down the shoulder. African game are incredibly tough so severely limiting their mobility is an added bonus.

This. Only time I would take a behind shoulder shot is if the animal is quartering away. Otherwise it's going right in the shoulder.

Good luck!

Ironically, I shot one at Mason Mountain years ago with a .22-250. Blew out the top of the heart. In hindsight, not something I would recommend. That evening it worked great (it is what we had).

See above, as stated African game should be shot slightly forward, not behind the shoulder, but right on it.

For those that have hunted at MM, does baiting help (it is allowed)? Or is it just by chance we see one? I think we're hunting by compartment and not stuck in the blind. They also have caliber restrictions (>.270/150gr) so hopefully we won't have any issues as long as we have good shot placement.
Thanks again for all of the info. If we get anything, I'll be sure to post pics.

We were allowed to use corn on our hunt, and they supplied the corn. And yes, it worked. But that was 16 years ago on a doe/spike hunt.

You should be able to see them regardless. We went there for a couple geology field trips and every time we always saw them.

This. My South African Gemsbok was killed with a 30-06 and a shot in the lower front shoulder. If you want to gut shoot African game, shoot them low in the chest behind the shoulder like a whitetail. Their vitals are shoved forward.
