My grandfather (Navy Chief) taught me to "chew" beans before I was in kindergarten - his sense of humor was such that im sure enjoyed returning caffeinated young children to his daughter - and it's what he did while working on things around the farm.

He said it was a Navy thing, but it could have just been his own personal idiosyncracy.

You guys are missing the whole "start the day with a good cup of hot coffee on a cool morning" thing here. My dilemma has 3 parts:

1. Ingest caffeine
2. In a pleasant fashion
3. Appropriate for sitting outside a tent on a cool morning.

Dipping ground coffee only satisfies the first of those.

I'm thinking I'll go with a Jetboil or something similar, and plead ignorance if caught.

When I hear Midland in August, the last thing I'd think of would be a "cool morning".

I'm with the others who are saying to use another delivery system. I love my coffee as much as the next guy, with the aromo and all the details of proper preparation (just ask any drug addict), but what all that habit and tradition doesn't realize is that where the rubber meets the road is when the caffeine hits your brain. It doesn't care if it came via your treasured "Happy Wife, Happy Life" mug, or that swallow of the last night's dregs of Dew with a No-Doze. I learned that once with my fishing buddy on our way to the launch early in the morning. I was being a real cry-baby about stopping for a cup, and he was (sensibly) pushing to get to the launch so we wouldn't be 42 in line and miss the early bite. I begrudgingly consented to swallowing a No-Doze, complaining that that wasn't what I really so desperately needed. 30 minutes later we hadn't gotten a bite and I was happy as a lark. Started wondering why exactly I had wasted all that time preparing and drinking coffee over the years...

They make a propane (1lb bottle) powered coffee pot. It does not have an open flame everything is contained in the housing.

Take some round river rocks that will fit In a mug and place them on the manifolds of the generators for the lights over night. They should get nice and hot. Use something to pick them up and put in the water one at a time. Remove and put in another. Should get nice and hot. Might taste like dirt, but you should have hot water.

Throw this on the manifold for a couple minutes.

I use my trusty rusty coleman white gas stove to heat water and use a pour over system to brew camp coffee. Best coffee in camp and I usually do that while heating a cast iron skillet on the second burner to get ready for the bacon.

Just got back from Scout camp yesterday. We were told that they would deliver coffee to the campsite in the morning, but it turned out to be a 30 oz thermos to share among 10 Scoutmasters from two troops in our campsite, so we ended up busting out the Jetboil. Unfortunately that was a bit cumbersome as you had to boil the water each time for each person.

After reading this thread, I'm definitely going with the battery/inverter next year. I have one for my tailgating TV rig, I'm just going to take one of the batteries and the inverter for the coffee pot next year!

The water temp to brew coffee needs to be much higher than palatable drinking temp. You should forego fresh brewed and stick with instant. The heat load is WAAAAAY lower.

I like the Rambler idea. You should be able to capture enough solar energy each day to still have hot water in the morning. The clear plastic lid that comes with the cup may be sufficient.

Be careful if you pinch off someone else's generator. Coffee pots have a pretty significant draw. The little heater in them is a juice hog.

Simple. Change camping locations. They have state parks you know.

BTW, It was about 100* F yesterday afternoon and 81* F this morning at 6:10am.

RtD is a great event with great entertainment. From what I have heard they have been building up little by little out there to provide more shelter. I think 10 years ago it was just a open field.

If you have never been to Midland in August, do like I did when I took my family to Six Flags on a 128* F heat index day, stay hydrated and think about the fun. Midland is "stick your head in the oven" type of heat, you may never see sweat a drop but you will be a few quarts low on fluid. Make drinking water something you think about often.

I bet a black plastic jug full of water would reach nearly scalding temps right now.

I actually frequently do this. Hell sometimes I'll just toss a palm full of beans in and crunch away on them.

snowaggie, this is not a place for personal improvement stories. Unless it involves a Yeti. Or a firearm.

Backwards, that biolite stove is beyond cool. Goes on the short list.

Only, I've seen those, and they look great. But I'm the only one that drinks coffee, and it would take up too much room.

Drshovelhead's idea is simple and elegant. I have no idea where I'd find river rock, round or otherwise, in Midland.

Ogre, that idea has a great deal of merit. It too goes on the short list. Cheap, light and simple, and it'd be my first Yeti purchase!

Have you though about camping where they do allow you to camp properly?

I'm no EE, but I'd think one of these

could handle a coffee pot.

Changing locations doesn't work. If we were going camping for the sake of camping we'd be going somewhere else. We're camping where we are because there's a rock festival right next door, said rock festival the only reason we'd be camping in Midland TX.

Yeah, RTD is a blast. Some of the bands are painfully hokey imo, but there've been some great shows there too. This will be our 7th year, and the first time we went the camping area was bare dirt. Pretty rough. But they've planted grass there now, and the last couple of years the tent was surrounded by nice green grass. They've built some decent facilities there too.

I grew up in Hobbs, and when I go back to Midland it's almost like home. That dry, drier, driest heat feels absolutely wonderful to me, but it will suck the moisture right outta yer bones. I tie a water bottle to my belt loop and refill it often.

I've been surprised the last couple of years by the evening temperatures. It's usually pleasant overnight, but I usually take a cheap sleeping bag as ground cover to sleep on top of. Last year I crawled into it about 4AM.

Solar heating/cooking does work well, when the sun is out.

JJMt, I hadn't thought about coldbrewed. I prefer my morning cup hot, but that would be the cheapest and simplest solution of them all.

I've used a simple DC/AC converter in the truck and plugged in a single serve keurig, could also use a regular coffee pot

Just take coffee beans with you and chew them up like jelly beans. Then drink some sun heated water. You'll be good to go in about 15min.
