What is your favorite bait and distance to fish from the shore? Also a location in the beach would be helpful. I was going to just drive north on the beach until I'm out of sight from others.

I have 6 days and do not like lounging at the beach.

I should have also asked what time of day is preferred..

Forget SPI

Go to PINS

Use pink or green fish bites to catch some whiting, pompano or other baitfish or use a cast net for mullet. Wade out to 1st or 2nd and cast into the gut. Should get you some nice reds or shark.

Not sure if I want to share my go to bait for catching bull shark though. lol

That's pretty much what I was planning except I will have to fish SPI.

Any preference on time of day?

Thanks for your feedback. I just bought the pink bites yesterday. I will probably buy some dead bait just in case the bites don't work as advertised

Live croaker - the bait stands have them - free lined in the second gut at sunrise. Thank me later.

I would like to do some surf fishing late summer/ early fall on PI north of SPI. What type of equipment do I need, other than my yeti, to round up for the trip? What rod/ reel combo works best to get the bait where it needs to be.

I'd like to eventually make it up to the east cut, but want to do a few trial runs before planning that kind of trip.

Tides are more important than time of day, but 7pm- sunrise for sharks. Reds really whenever. Look for breaks in the first bar and pinches in the wade gut. SPI is a lot of fun. There will be some 'beached whales' in the buff if you go to far north. FYI in case of children with you. Good luck!

So far I've caught nothing. Would love to catch a whiting and chop it up. The water is crazy clear

Keep going to SPI, don't go to PINS. PINS is no good. Never catch any fish there...

Plus, I've got about 1600 yards of solitude booked this weekend somewhere between mile markers 10 and 25, depending on beach conditions.

Pink Fish Bite and a fresh dead shrimp, second cut (or even 10 feet out) will get that whiting.

This.

I usually run a double drop. I'll put one pink and one green. Pink usually does the trick but some days they can't get enough of the green.

Something like this. Usually you can find it in any sporting goods store or make your own.

DOn't mean to hijack the thread, but would a smaller SUV with only front wheel drive be able to access any of the beach? I've heard that about the first 5 miles are accessible without 4 wheel drive. WOuld love to take my son down for some beach camping and fishing.

that's the rig I used and did catch whiting. I'm headed out in a bit to try again. Correct me if I'm wrong but 2:28-4:28 should be the best based on the following link.

Good deal. Yeah pretty much my go to for catching bait in the surf.

Yes that should be one of the best times for today.

I am a believer (to an extent) of solunar charts. I have had times where fish started biting to the exact minute that was predicted when it had been dead before. Then suddenly stop exactly when the span ended. I've seen animals become active during those periods when they weren't before or after. I know some is likely a coincidence. To counter that I have had action really pick up as soon as the 'off times' rolled around. More often than not though they seem to follow (at least a bit) the charts.

Be sure to have some gafftop or whiting out past the 2nd for when that 9-10 time rolls around. Should be the perfect time to catch something toothy.

Use the whiting head for redfish.
