Just tell him to buy a damn boat that doesn't cost 100 freaking thousand dollars for goodness sake. How about 20k or 30k? Sheesh..

It does not cost 10k/year to maintain and own a boat.

I have rented plenty, but plan to own one day because it takes a lot of the fun out for everyone. Btw, renting a boat on lake Austin is a total PITA. Anyone with the right resources and effort can own that market.

Eh, not always.

I looked at used vs. new for the boat I just ordered. The difference in the few used I could find was only about $6,000. That's not a big enough delta to forgo the benefits of a brand new rig.

And I could have paid cash too but in running the numbers it was more beneficial to carry a note rather than pay cash and lose the return I'm earning on the money market account where we keep our liquid savings.

I took a quick glance at the OPs blog.

He suggested that the resale of a 10 year old boat that cost $100k would be $35ish. I think that's what he said. (he may be suggesting the depreciation would be $35k).

The problem with that is he has very little knowledge of the boating world.

These high cost inboard wakeboats have incredible resale. I bought a 2005 boat had it for 2 years. Sold it for $750 less than I paid. That doesn't include the gas, insurance, and storage money I put into it. But I essentially "rented" the boat for $325/year. Worth it!

I then bought a 2007 boat and sold it this year, 8 years of use. Sold it for $7000 less than I paid. Worth it.

These things don't depreciate like cars or other boats.

I'm not suggesting boats are a good way to invest money. But it's not as horrible as many things. It's a toy that costs money. But if you enjoy it, it can be well worth the cost.

My wife is a CPA then now a CFP who is as frugal as you can be. She is not opposed to boat buying. But I am opposed to her posting on TexAgs about things she knows nothing.

If Mrs suprafly ever advises you about guns. Do the opposite

The problem isn't buying a boat, the problem is the felt need to get the biggest, fastest, prettiest, $50k+, depreciating, waste of resources out there.

Get a used 1860 aluminum with a 90 horse Yamaha and you'll get years of fun with very little maintenance cost. Not much you can't do in it in TX waters but it doesn't do much for baller status.

Can't have more than 4 in it, can't ski in it.

Your definition of fun is not the same as mine or others on this board that use boats (or have multiple) for different things than just fishing.

I've had an aluminum boat. Great rig- 16' Alumacraft semi-v with a 25hp tiller. It was rigged very bare bones. Got me into super skinny water but it was a beast to pole and very noisy. Also not really big on comfort.

Any aluminum boat - other than those deep-v Yankee boats they use to troll for walleye or whatever - will beat your brains out in any sort of a chop.

I always thought the secret to boats is to make friends with a Cajun.
He'll have a John boat, Bass boat, Ski boat and maybe a Bay boat.
He can't take them all out at once, so do whatever he isn't.

You don't need an expensive boat to go water skiing.

Just took my new to me 2009 mastercraft x1 out for the first time this weekend. I love it and don't really care what others think. Its a bad ass boat and the resale on it is very high.

Where does one rent a 23 ft. bay boat for the week?

But whatever you do don't buy a boat with a friend. The only thing worse than owning half a boat is owning a half of two boats!

Sweet. Had a master craft as a kid and loved going out almost every weekend. If only I lived near the water now....

Boats generally have a long life and hold value, especially inboard sport boats... I am fixing up a 85 Supra Sunsport I picked up for $800. They sell on CL all the time for $6500

Now RV's are the money pit
I see people get one... use it 3 or 4 time a year for the first 2 or 3 years and then something happens and it sits for the next few years and deteriorates... Cost $25k+ new - 6 or 8 years later the value is crap.
Just bought a $40K 2 slide RV on Craigslist 3 years old for <$20K a few weeks ago.

I use ours 7-10 trips a year, or about 25-35 days a year and love it!

If you buy a good sought after name hull the outboard can be repowered relatively easily. Classic whalers sell for a ton even today. Many flats skiffs are selling for 20k+ 10-15 hrs old, consider what it likely cost new back then that is tremendous retention in value.
