Neither. You'll find more value and equal results with a Weber Smokey Mountain.

Agree. Get a medium or large WSM.

Or an Akorn..which has produced some great BBQ for me.

So what is the deciding factor between a offset smoker and an Akron / egg / weber?
Is the offset for huge quantities of meat or traditional wood fires and the others for coal and smaller amounts of meat?
Is the egg just a Cadillac version of the weber?
When I think BBQ I think of an offset smoker.
The options are pretty confusing and the price ranges are huge

Egg and weber are not the same. Totally different designs. That said the WSM is significantly cheaper but just as effective in making great BBQ. I have the 22" version and can easily get 18 hour cooks out of one charcoal load. The 18" will run about $299. You will be more than happy with it. I had an offset before my WSM. Never again.

I like an offset smoker. It takes more attention to keep temp at the right level but that's part of the fun. IMO eggs and and the weber are for the folks who want to start the cook and not have to pay much attention throughout the cook.

I'll admit I'm a little whacko but I have all three: Akorn (in CStat), an offset and a BGE at home

I use all three and I can't imagine being without any of them.

The Akorn is tons easier to move (tailgates, etc) than the BGE and does a fair job on semi-long low temp cooks and on short hot cooks. It is not nearly as well made or as efficient as the BGE but its $300 and it has the other qualities you need

The offset is my go-to for volume cooks....especially ribs. I can put 8 racks on at once and do a very good 3 hr cook and I think I get a lot better smoke

For cooking one or two butts, or a brisket, nothing controls the heat better than the BGE for long cooks. I have absolutely no fear in getting a smoke started at 6-7 pm and going to bed and sleeping soundly all night with temps in the 225-235 range. A 14-16 hr cook has never been easier or more efficient. Wanna sear the hell out of a whole tenderloin? I can get the egg up to 550-600 F and make you a tenderloin slider make you slap your momma.
