More rain again this morning south of Houston. Started seeing water creeping into the neighborhood. Rosharon gauge shows 52.44 feet, predicted crest is 52.9 feet, should hit sometime tomorrow morning. An area west of me is under mandatory evacuation right now. Doubt it gets bad enough at my place to make a huge problem, but you never know.

The worst part is that the water is predicted to stay near 53 feet for a long time, going to be a long and slow crest wave with this one.

Such a shame. A&M had cellular flood gauges at just about every major water crossing on ft hood, and some upstream. The army decided that they didn't want to pay the upkeep, so all the gauges were pulled

What's a cellular flood gauge?

Indeed.

Crest lasted about 24 hours in Rosenberg.

Hempstead is beginning its second rise. I would guess next week we see Richmond rise again.

Looks like we might get some training storms today.

Nothing scientific...

But just checking out several of the upstream reservoirs that River still has a LOT of water to process. Belton and Stillhouse Hollow for example are fairly deep into flood storage and have flood stage creeks flowing into them. Though both of them can still hold a good deal more water. PK is passing the flood straight through with the river above and below in flood stage. It looks like they're dumping Granbury before another rush of water hits there (not a flood control reservoir). I could go on looking at more lakes, but it's just more of the same. Those with flood storage are getting deep into it and those without are all at conservation pool and passing the water through.

For all the lakes along the Brazos river, it doesn't have any large FC reservoirs. Certainly none in the downstream areas that can shave the peak off this event. Then again, I don't know that it would be feasible to build any. To get significant flood storage a reservoir would just have to spread out too far.

I foresee it taking weeks or even months to process all of that water downstream. Shoot, the Brazos has been elevated for over a year! I presume still working last years water through the system trying to keep it within the banks all the way through.

Edit... Lake Whitney is at 552' can still take an additional 19 ft of water and doesn't look to be releasing. I downloaded the depth/capacity curves, but they aren't calculated out to Emergency Spillway Crest elevation at 571. The extrapolation stops at 556, which is ~200k ac ft above where it is now.

Belton Lake looms like it picked up several feet in the last 48 hours. It is about where it was last year when things started settling down.

It needs to stop raining.

Oh, no doubt it's going to take a long time to get all of the water downstream. Luckily the Brazos has a fairly deep channel for most of the system, or at least the lower part of the system anyway and can handle a lot of flow normally without jumping the banks. We just need to get to a point where it is back in the banks first, then maintaining a high flow isn't much of a problem.

Rosenberg is going to continue to be a choke point. The bends in the river combined with the levee system they built so that houses could be constructed on rice and cotton fields is going to be a persistent problem for that area in high flow events.

This is typical for the Brazos. So if you are not use to the flooding (a lot of areas are flooding for the first time in a long time) expect a "rebound" flood. If you have livestock avoid putting them back into the pastures until after it dries and you get a good rainfall on it. Helps clean the food sources prior to animals consuming it.

Don't know what they were driving/riding in... My guess is weight restrictions on the bridge?
OnlyForNow

I can't imagine that whatever they were riding in was too heavy for the bridge yet light enough to get washed off the low water crossing.

It doesn't matter honestly... It's a horribly tragic deal all around.

Nope. They were in an LMTV. Those bridges will take anything the Army moves, as far as weight.

The report says they were in a "light medium tactical vehicle". That doesn't really make sense, it's either light or medium. A light would be an MRAP. A medium would be like a deuce and half. Im guessing that due to the number of people that they were in a deuce and a half type vehicle. Something like this:

I see convoys of these trucks quite often driving on Fort Hood. They pass over these bridges all the time. Just doesn't make sense.

I spoke to my Dad about this last night. He worked on Fort Hood most of his life.. He said there was a similar incident some years back where a Lt. made the driver of a vehicle cross a stream. They were swept away and at least one person died. That Lt. ended up in Leavenworth.

Ok so there is a Light Medium. So probably a little bit smaller rig than I posted above.

I drive over that crossing every day. There were helicopters, MPs, GWs, S&R, dogs, boats, probably 50+ vehicles at that location yesterday afternoon and this morning.

In a hurry, didn't think the water was that deep, they were driving a 4WD, hold my beer and watch this, orders said to take that road, got lost, didn't know the bridge was right there, etc. etc.

Basically one or several of the reasons civilians do stupid stuff like this and get hurt or killed. I'm sure the word will come out. Man, between this, the death of a Blue Angel, the loss of a Thunderbird aircraft, etc it was a bad day for the military.

There's a bridge on the west side that's closed to thru traffic for repairs, perhaps he was thinking of that one.

LMTV is the modern equivalent of a deuce and a half.

Well sht. Mandatory evac issued today, and I am included. I am right on the very edge of the area, probably going to just rife it out. My yard barely got wet a year ago when the river crested at almost the same level it will crest at tonight.

We,will see how it goes, at least most of my neighbors are staying around as well.
