Everything on the up and in East Texas? I'll be headed to the Crescent City early tomorrow and wanted to make sure there wasn't anything weather/flood related I should be on the lookout for on the way.

Headed out of Houston btw.

I'd assume the grass disconnected from the soil and is floating, craziness

Any possibility that the Brazos or some of the other rivers will change course back to an older or different route/
I wouldn't rule out the possibility. I've seen meanders cut off in below bank full flows.

I would not expect it to make a full switch to another side of the floodplains.
That's the sort of thing I was thinking of.

In 1998 the Blanco moved enough for a stretch of River Rd to have to be relocated 100+ yards to the north. The flood caused a lot of erosion on the high side and the cliffs fell into the river. This was maybe 20-30 feet of land though. I'm curious to see how it turned out this time.

Just south of FM50 and TX Hwy21 is "Moehlman Slough", a former path of the Brazos River. It's a very deep cut, with water sometimes pooled in the bottom. Totally FULL as of yesterday!

Ive always wondered if you could fish in there if you entered from the river side. I bet nobody ever touches it but I'm sure some farmer thinks it's his.
Someone tried to go gig gars in our pasture because "its part of the creek". Fool gonna do nothing but spook cattle and get himself killed on a hidden barbed wire fence. Locals ran him off, he was from Houston area and came out to go fishing.

That's a crazy video. Where was that taken? It seems crazy that the utv wouldn't fall in or get stuck if the water and ground were seperated like that.

I think that's either in Canada or Alaska/Russia.

There is a special soil type or condition that allows that to happen and the water gets under the veg. but above the permafrost. This is somewhat of an educated guess.

We sunk a tracker to the axles( I asked for help on here) after driving on sandy loam like that and we broke through. It was on a real gentle slope up from a flood control lake.

We had that happen on a much smaller scale at the golf course I work at in central Texas this week. Poked a hole in it and water squirted out until it drained. I believe in our situation there is bedrock underground that the water ran on until it was forced up, detaching the thatch mat of the sod on top of it.

Here is Lake Grapevine's spillway today. You can see the road in the back that gets shut down tonight.

Oddly the one time I've experienced land like that was at Chilifest. Granted it was before "setup" day. A few of us were walking around and found several spots where it was happening. By the end of the next night of course those spots were just grass-less mud holes.

I also remember that from chilifest. We were jumping up and down on it.

hehe, mother nature gave you a free water bed at chilifest, and you just jumped up and down on it till it broke.

I think that was the year that the Brazos River crept up all the way to West Columbia, which is several miles from the Brazos. I remember seeing river water in the ditches around town.

WC is less than 2 miles from the river. If the Brazos comes out of its banks in that area, West Columbia is going to get water. Won't be the first time.

When the flood maps were redrawn in 1989 Fema took Mallard and Manor lake area on Cr 25 out of the AE zone and rezoned it X. I had an insured that had a house there and the early 90's had more than a foot of water in his house for 2 months

I don't understand how anybody could classify that area as low risk. A frog spits and it floods in that area.

Which one is Mallard lake? I know where Manor, Eagle Nest and Mann lakes are, and there are a couple of reservoirs over there as well on that side of the river (technically Mann is a reservoir as well), but not sure which one Mallard is.

We call it "pumping" on the jobsite when it happens. Just the right amount of water and right soil type will produce a solid, yet viscous surface. I'm assuming in the video the root system of the ground cover is fairly substantial to hold everything together.

I wonder how far down you'd go if you broke through?

Yeah, those crazy old SOBs. They pay a ton of money, get a deed to a piece of ground, use it, maintain it, and pay taxes on it for 40-50 years and the next thing you know, they think they own it

I see it happen in dense St. Augustine turf when there is an irrigation leak. Homeowners freak out when their yard starts to raise up like a dome.

Floated the 4 hour float in 2 hours a couple years ago during a period of heavy rain. It was great, free beer after every rapid.

It was actually the river in recent times. I bet the state still owns it and nobody ever paid a dime for it.

We were there last weekend. We went golfing instead of floating but our neighbors chose floating. A couple thunderstorms rolled through, we just went to the clubhouse, they were screwed. They had a miserable time....

I'm trying to figure out where that is. Are Cowboys Golf Club and Grapevine municipal right behind that?

My guess is the lightning caused more trouble than the rain.

Cowboys course is on the other end (south) end of the dam. Grapevine course is in between.

Mallard lake is just north of Mann and Manor is a little further north of Cr 27. I know its crazy but here in Brazoria Market street dead ends right at the Brazos and that is in zone X
