Growing up I'm not sure I ever saw the Cowhouse out if banks. But then again I don't remember it ever being this wet.

if you look on google earth at brazos/burleson counties, you can see that the Brazos used to be a couple of miles west of its current channel. There is an old channel that is west of FM 50 and snakes across the river bottom down towards Independence.
Are you talking about the one labelled Old River in Google Earth?
Yes

If it gets that high what will it do to the university farm and other land in the bottoms over there?

I wouldn't expect flooding from the lake at the A&M farm (from Somerville), it is well north of where the lake discharge meets with the Brazos.

It looks like Dallas is going to be hit hard again tonight, is there any practical method to protecting my house if the creek rises too high? Sand bags in front of doors?

You need to sandbag the entire perimeter with a pump behind it. It will come in everywhere one it gets above the foundation.

Good luck

yes, and you can see some old channels as well that look orphaned and plowed over or grown over with grass) b/c they've silted in.

We have a place SE of Hamilton on the Cowhouse and the recent rains and floods have washed out our dam.

FM 1458 in Wallis is now closed. Anyone without a purpose will be issued a ticket no questions. Helicopter, horses and boats being used to save as many head as possible from the last few herds.

My Dad is devastated knowing he had those pastures years ago and they tried to move the cows out the wrong direction (towards the river) in a flood yesterday causing them to spook. Several old ranchers came to help, and make sure the young guys don't do something stupid.

Just an FYI for anyone in the Grapevine/Flower Mound area, apparently they're going to be closing the dam road over Lake Grapevine at 1PM today. Water is about to crest the spillway and flood the road. The traffic around the 2499 and 114 area is about to get unbearable.

Any possibility that the Brazos or some of the other rivers will change course back to an older or different route/

And 2499 was diverting traffic to the dam road this morning because 2499 was flooded.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility. I've seen meanders cut off in below bank full flows.

I would not expect it to make a full switch to another side of the floodplains.

There's a hairpin bend just above the fm 60 bridge that's only 100yrds wide. Wonder if that will cut off in my lifetime.

The road over the dam at Grapevine dips down as it goes through the spillway.

I think that was the year that the Brazos River crept up all the way to West Columbia, which is several miles from the Brazos. I remember seeing river water in the ditches around town.

WC is less than 2 miles from the river. If the Brazos comes out of its banks in that area, West Columbia is going to get water. Won't be the first time.

In all likelyhood, yes.

Sorry, either misinformed or an update. 8 PM

quote:
Corps of Engineers to Close Fairway Drive (Dam Road) at 8 p.m. Friday, May 29 The Town just received word the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plan to close
Fairway Drive (Dam Road) at approximately 8 p.m. Friday, May 29.
Currently, the lake is a little more than 2-feet from cresting the
spillway. The Flower Mound Streets Department will deploy barricades
and sign boards at the traffic circle adjacent to our Town boundary to
divert traffic.
In the interest of life safety and property conservation, the Corps respectfully requests people to not trespass
onto Corps property. Both the Corps and the Town do not want curious
individuals to be swept away by water coming over the spillway and the
Corps also does not want erosion on their dam as a result of foot
traffic as they have seen at other area lakes.

And there is no bridge over the spillway. you drive on the backside of it like someone else posted.
You can kind of see it in the lower right part of the picture.

Sorry it isn't more clear. The 40mph gust front made holding the tripod difficult. The shot was last night as the gust front hit us. Shot taken at the top of the hill on Old Denton Road above the Fort Worth Cabela's near Alliance Airport.

7 second long exposure. Picked up two different lightening strikes and the orange glow on the grass is from a mercury vapor light 50' behind me.

When the flood maps were redrawn in 1989 Fema took Mallard and Manor lake area on Cr 25 out of the AE zone and rezoned it X. I had an insured that had a house there and the early 90's had more than a foot of water in his house for 2 months

Just south of FM50 and TX Hwy21 is "Moehlman Slough", a former path of the Brazos River. It's a very deep cut, with water sometimes pooled in the bottom. Totally FULL as of yesterday!

Ive always wondered if you could fish in there if you entered from the river side. I bet nobody ever touches it but I'm sure some farmer thinks it's his.

Yeah, everything is on stilts on that side of the road. Haven't been back that way in years, but there used to be excellent fishing on Mallard and Manor. Enormous gators too!

I've walked on ground that did that. It was a really really weird feeling. Never could get an explanation on it.
