yes it is bad to get this much rain, not as bad as Alvin in 1979,45 inches in 24 hours
might still be north American record
The Alvin record was 43 inches, and it was broken by Harvey over near Port Arthur I believe.
Harvey didn't break the Alvin record I don't believe (not over a 24 hour period anyway). Alvin's 24 hour record was broken by an event in Hawaii within the last year or two.

Anahuac, or thereabouts on the east side of Galveston Bay got over 50" during Harvey.

In 24 hours? Don't think so. I had over 46" during Harvey at my house....but over about 4 days.

in my feeble little brain Hawaii is not part of north America, so the record stays in texas

I was referencing the US record. And I'd agree that Hawaii is not NA, so you're right there (assuming neither Mexico nor Canada has had worse - I haven't looked that up)...

Looks like Quintana Roo had over 64" in 24 hours during hurricane Wilma in 2005. Western Hemisphere and Northern Hemisphere record.

Probably correct that I'm thinking of over 2 or 3 days. Still haven't had my morning coffee yet, cobwebs haven't cleared.

Appreciate it. Not worried about the house or me, but a lot of other folks. Rosharon crest was increased to 51.5 overnight, that's into the really scary numbers. Over 50 gets my attention, over 51 is just bad news for a lot of folks. We are just beat down from annual floods - hasn't been like this here since the early 90's when we had some really wet years and some good floods.

About to make the trip down to Lake Jackson. I'm sure it's going to get bad once the Brazos, St Bernard and all associated creeks really start moving down there

Yep. I don't know how high it will get, but the 2004 ramp was innundated 2 days ago, and there is a lot of water heading that direction. West Columbia gauge isn't looking to get as high though, so hopefully the flooding isn't as bad down there as it was last year.

Since I now live in Pennsylvania and was badly harmed by the record rainfall up here last year, I've started paying attention to PA weather records.

In northern PA back in '42 it apparently rained 30.8 inches in only 4.75 hours.

https://www.schnabel-eng.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Extreme-Events.pdf

Quote:

"In the Austin, PA region, many people said the rain did not come down in drops, and they had the visual impression, at least, that the rain came down in streams which they likened to strings and ropes there were people who had not been able to reach shelter and were afraid they would drown during the downpour through lack of oxygen. One man expressed the effect by saying it was just like breaking water after a long dive, lungs bursting, with water pouring down over his head."
Quote:

the rainfall rate for very short periods ranged from 15 to nearly 40 inches per hour. Eisenlohr hypothesized that for such high rates of rainfall the drops would be so close together as to coalesce into streams and sheets as a result of mutual mass attraction, possibly explaining the phenomenon where very different catches were recorded in containers only a few feet apart

H o l y. S. H. I. T.

As a river dweller who just had to deal with 36" in 24 hours upriver, this is an absolutely horrifying thought.

Bump this thread for severe weather expected through west Texas, panhandle and north central Texas this afternoon and evening. I live in Lubbock, we are now in a tornado watch. Weather channel guys are hanging out in OKC and Wichita Falls. Heads up.

That all depends on your view of the situation I suppose. There have been at least 10 confirmed tornadoes so far and many more to follow. The people spending the evening in fear can definitely feel the "bite".

Maybe so. It seemed like the worst of it was supposed to be in the early evening, but what's firing up between Abilene and Midland now looks worse than anything else that's happened.
