Fished with All Water Guides out of Austin. I'd recommend them if you're interested in catching feisty river bass on the fly. Put in below Webberville Park. Throwing poppers at the bank. What these river bass lack in size they definitely make up for in fight- these suckers will hammer a popper.

Tough conditions with the wind, cold front coming in yesterday, and the water being off-color due to recent rains. My partner and I put 8 bass in the boat- 4 each. 3 Guadalupe bass and 1 LMB apiece. We didn't see another person on the river but evidently the 4 other guides from All Water had their clients bat a fat 0.00% Haven't gotten pics of the Guads yet but here's my LMB:

And then this dude showed up:

Hey, I wanna see what those guys are up to

I think we're gonna need a bigger boat

6 & 8wts. Throwing some big hairy bugs and foam poppers. Plus the wind was brutal most of the time.

Only 8 bass between 2 people with green water on the colorado? shoulda used conventional tackle.

That's a slow day for that stretch.

Just a harmless water snake....... Good thing it wasn't a massive, fat water moccasin.

We could have caught more with conventional but the conditions were still tough. And besides, catching them on the fly was the entire point.

Fly or not, the bass fishing on the lower colorado is outstanding with decent water (well within "decent" by your pics). I don't think many non kayak enthusiasts realize how good it is.

I've not fished that stretch before, only around Columbus. But, yeah it wasn't a great day. We were fishing immediately post-front which dropped water temps and put the fish off the bite.

We could have caught more if we'd have been tossing craw-jigs or something similar but that's not how we wanted to fish.

I'd rather catch one bass on a popper than 3 on a wooly bugger and 10 on conventional gear.

I've caught them around Lagrange with low water temps but good water.

Come to think of it, even trying to throw plastics would limit access to some of the places where I usually catch the bass there, particularly the spotalupe bass in that stretch. Deep, fast water seems to be the ticket and you don't get many casts if you're not good throwing cranks or spinnerbaits.

Looks like you had a good time, I wouldn't worry about what the know-it-all's say.

Sorry...I really just wanted to bring (further) attention to how cool that stretch of river is.

There's excellent public access on that stretch too.

Shhh, don't tell anyone about the fishing down there. There is some great bass fishing in that stretch, and the top water action on a fly is just getting going. Greg Smith (www.riverhillsoutfitters.net) and Judson Cole (centraltexasflyfishing.com) are good guides in that area as well. Definitely worth the trip if you've never been.

Don't want to derail too much. I live in Austin and want to get started in fly fishing. Any of these guides good for someone who has never casted? Or is there anyone else that could be recommended? Almost bought a combo at Cabelas but would prefer to get at least a little hands on first.

All Water Guides would be a good place to learn.

And Cabela's has some good gear but I'd recommend NOT buying from a big box store like Cabela's or Bass Pro until you've got some experience and know what you want/like/need.

You can go to the Orvis store in Austin, Sportsman's Finest out in Bee Caves, or Living Waters up in Round Rock. Talk with the folks there, get some instruction, get on the water with a guide, and then look at buying your own gear.

We float from Austin's Colony to Weberville in kayaks. My brother caught a double digit bass on that stretch a couple of years ago.

This is a video from Greg Smith from fishing this stretch (there's a few scenes from the Devils and guad).

If you want to get started fly fishing, the Texas Fly Fishing Expo is in New Braunfels, May 29-31. Beginning fly fishing classes $10 for 2 hrs. Other great classes in salt and freshwater fly fishing. Spey rods, double haul, you name it, there's a class for it.

txflyfishexpo.com buy tickets online. Lots of vendors and guides. Living Waters will be there I noticed.
