I haven't seen any threads about show cattle but figured I'd ask.

Anybody have any picks for slick shear club calf bulls?

I'm fixing to start an A.I. program on my little herd and looking for opinions.

Thanks

Man Among Boys is a bull that has been siring a lot of high selling club calves in recent years that have also been winning in the end. Monopoly, Solid Gold, and Troubadour are also consistent producers.

I can post more tonight from home, I just sat down on the showbox here @ Co fair to see whats up on TA.

Ag655 is right, MAB was top seller for topsires last year. Both of those Kris Black bulls have bred a lot of slicks too. Monopoly, real monopoly is going to be $$. Like flush $$, not thow it in a cow $$. You may want to investigate a son or clone there.

Tell us about your cows and how they're bred. ETA - THA, PHA, any clubby bloodlines in them?

Oh man i miss the days of being on the belt buckle circuit with the steers. I've been a decade removed from showing but I still remember doing my homework on AI sires.

I remember I had 2 stock show steers place top 5 of class (chi) out of Who Made Who and I had a first in Class at the county fair out of Meyers 734

I graduated high school in 1989 so that was the last year I showed steers. We paid $1k for a steer that came in 2nd in his class at county.

I am afraid to ask what a similar steer would cost today. I have a 6 yr old I want to start at 9 like I did in 4H.

Dad has a few of those Bulls currently on cows.

This is all to try and help some struggling local Ag programs. The cows are all pretty commercial. They're based out of straight South Texas brush cows. Over the last 5 yrs or so we've bred up with Sim-Angus and club bulls to where the heifers generally do well in commercial classes at our local show. The goal is to breed budget minded show calves out of our American X cows.

TLDR: Looking to produce budget show calves out of American X cows for a slick show in March. Calves are unlikely to hit the circuit and will most likely go to two or less prospects before terminal. Would like to keep heifers.

Go.see Gary West in Pleasanton. Dad has used his bulls for years on Beefmaster cross and Brahman cross cows in Jackson County and has had lots of good calves. He had two July steers that I wanted to buy for my kids for our county show but they were too young.

Also check with Mitch Tomas at Tomas Ranch in Raymondville. They primarily are running Charolais but he does do some club calves and has loads of experience in judging and showing cattle.

West still manly runs Charolais correct? I live in Pleasanton, just haven't been past his place in a while.

If you're wanting to raise American cross calves, go talk to Timmy Lucherk over by Poth. His cattle have been doing extremely well at the major shows the last several years and he can help you with bulls that will work on commercial American cows.

Also, contact Rudy & Jeff Schroeder between Pleasanton & Floresville. Jeff is an Ag & you can find his contact info on his website www.cattle.com. They're quietly raising some good exotic & American cross calves that are doing well at the county & major shows.

Are these Schroeder's related to Charlie Schroeder from Taylor? We got several calves from him in the mid 80's. He had some great cattle back then.

To my knowledge Rudy & Jeff are not related to the Schroeder family that lives up by Taylor, unless it's distantly. Rudy, the dad, has been raising Brahman cattle for a lot of years. His son Jeff is more the club calf guy.

They're good, honest people and have some really nice cattle. I've bought show steers off of them the past 3-4 years & the people I buy for have gotten along well with the cattle.

I talked to Jeff during Christmas break & he said they've got a lot of heifer calves this year. Might be a good opportunity to purchase some great American cross genetics to start a club calf herd with, as they can't keep all their heifers.

Good to know. I might be in the market for a few head this summer.

I can save you calling Mitch because I just leaned over and asked him here at the show what he'd breed American cows to for ABC clubby calves (as noted above, he's not breeding americans, his cows are all char with a few of his clubby offspring mixed in). I know he's not a fan of MAB but he did mention him as well as Walk the line (walks alone son) and cautioned to stay away from American Idol (straight fronted calves).

Holy sh^t I just looked and MAB is $200 a straw? Time to go see how much is left in the tank.

I applaud what you are doing Ag655 and you've had lots of good suggestions on here. I'll offer one more- Call Dave Allan at Genesource. Dave is as super helpful guy with all the wins it takes to prove he knows what he's doing (check Bar A Cattle for proof), he's a Purina Ambassador, he's a good Ag, and he's in the business of setting you up with the semen to get your AI program going. If I was in your position I'd call him, tell him what cows I have, and what I wanted to do. Good luck.

KSIS cattle out in Tahoka has a bull called American Dream. Had some banner winners out of him and Matt is as solid of a guy, and aggie, as you'll ever visit with. (His American calves get along very well every year at majors). Think his wife had champion steer at Houston in '99 too. They know what they're doing.

He'd be on my short list to call.

Dalton Nix is another great aggie that's doing really well with American steers. He's just outside of Granbury in Tolar. (Nix Farms). He'd also be on my short list.

Big fan of Man Among Boys, Walks Alone, Hef, and Heat Wave. My son currently has a Gert steer that was sired out of Walks Alone and a Limmy/Maine steer out of Man Among Boys. Took Grand Champion with the Limmy/Maine steer & Reserve Grand with the Gert at our county 2 weeks ago. Headed to Ft. Worth with the big Limmy/Maine steer. That steer has some serious shag but if you were to slick him, he's all there. We AI/embryo on my stock, then I always see what my buddy Jacob Tusa has. Tusa is also a good Ag.

Seeing the name 'Gary West' (same as my uncle) surprised me a little bit since he has been out of the beef/cattle business for a number of years and is back in O&G.

There is a wealth of good information and resources in this thread. Best of luck to everyone at their respective local, county, and major shows!

This morning's local daily paper caught a picture of Centerpole doing a good job of keeping durocs from hiding in his corner.

How the hell I got roped into that I still don't understand. I specifically got on the lamb/goat committee because I DIDN'T want to run a pig board. /smallcountyproblems

Yes, but the look of pride and joy on that young man's face that's showing that pig is what the whole stock show scene is about.

No joke. Had a text this week from one of the fair board members asking if I could help with the chicken show. The one thing I know about showing chickens is the the white part on top of chicken sh@t is still chicken SH@T .

Oh and last year my buddy lost his voice at the auction so I used by big outside voice to spot bids. Now i am assistant auction committee chairman. /smalltownfairproblems

I always get roped into working the hog show even though I'm on the steer and heifer committee (usually the ring steward then too) but I wouldn't have it any other way!

I went through and picked out about 30 I'm going to try and work with. I split them into three groups and the first group started the estrus synch process this weekend.

Small town shows are the best. The next two months are going to be full of committee meetings, fundraisers and show days!
