With 30 cows, you may only get 2-3 calves that are good enough to be club calves, especially with just commercial cows.

Well if I'm shooting for a 50% birth rate out of the A.I. stunt. Then I've got a Yellow Jacket son and very promising Gert bull I'm going to leave with them.

I'm not planning on winning Houston with these calves or anything like that. We average about 15-20 calves a year that end up being shown out of a largely unmanaged herd so I figured I'd try to pick out the top 10% of our cows and put a little effort into it.

Your biggest input outside of money is going to be time and labor. Do you have the cows somewhere you can actively watch heats and are you going to sync them? And who's doing your AI work? From a having done this before with our herd before we started leasing Bulls, your part time helping out some kids could become a full time gig until you the get cows settled.

I agree. And the tragedy, for me, is that EVERY ONE of those darn WA calves I have fed has been an idiot. Walks Alone and to some degree Carpe DIem have been buttholes in our barn. Walks Alone is unsurpassed when it come to throwing hair though.

If I wanted to learn how to breed gert cows I'd sure pay close attention to what Joe Shelby (yet another good Ag) in Robstown breeds to. His show results, and sale results, are hard to argue with.

Shelby made a mint selling calves out of Ammo and his Gert cows back in the day. Not sure what he's using these days.
