Saw this guy cruising through my backyard this morning. It appeared to be a baby. Only about 8 inches long.

It's a baby Racer (Coluber constrictor), subspecies dependent on where you live in the state.

Yeah, I'm going to go with 12f on this one. juvenile racer is pretty spot on with the pattern washout on the tail. Plus, he tends to be correct on all of his snake IDs.

I try, but I'm not as good. (sad me)

Here is a juvenile racer pic from wiki. I live north of Houston (The Woodlands area).

It's called a yellow bellied racer.

The adults look nothing like that. It's a juvenile.

Here's an adult:

In the Woodlands area you start to get into the Buttermilk Racer subspecies range, and the adults typically look like this:

I'm fairly decent on snake id, and I will freely defer to 12f Mane on snake id....and he has cool photos.

Looks like an alive snake. It would look better as a dead snake...

I tend to leave most critters alive these days. He's probably doing more good than harm.

A few years ago I saw two of those mating on my property. It was pretty cool but when they spotted me they were off to the races.
