Sunny here now and they've basically removed all chance of rain for the work day.

Still shows a good chance of rain for the next week but we were supposed to get a half inch last night and we got nothing. After the last few years my battered Aggie syndrome is only matched by my battered drought syndrome.

Another alternative is Caprock Canyons State Park about an hour southeast of Canyon.

If the rain stays to the north, it's possible CC might be drier, though most outlooks I've seen would indicate that the heavy stuff will be to the south and east. CC is less developed than PD, and it's on the edge of the caprock, not a narrow canyon, so it is different, though much of the scenery is similar. Also has the state buffalo herd roaming much of the park.

appreciate the input. the fiance and i are going to discuss tonight and make a decision. We were planning on bringing the dog, but with the rain, we wouldnt' be able to go really anywhere with him. Guess he's SOL regardless of where we go. He's going to have to stay home.

The NW Panhandle is currently being pounded. Got a half inch here in town, probably less on the land SW of town. Crud.

PD Canyon about 8 tenths tonight.

Austin news reporting that the Low pressure system that is generating all the rain may travel south towards central Texas Monday & Tuesday. If that happens there is a good chance of 1-3" of rain for us

Floydada had around 1.7" during the night. Roughly an inch was received just north of Amarillo. Haven't seen any numbers for the northern or eastern portions of the panhandle although yesterday's radar showed a nice storm over Dallam County.

MonkeyKnifeFighter-

Search around on the boards, we've got some pretty extensive Palo Duro Canyon threads on Panhandle.

Or PM, email (in profile) or just start a thread when about to head to the Amarillo area. I've got lots of opinions, all worth the price you'll pay.

Any numbers for the Wellington area?

Looks like 2.5" in Wellington. If you don't mind running JAVA, go to the page linked below. It's for Channel 7 (KVII Amarillo) and their network of weather stations, located all over the Panhandle, mainly at schools. Give you real-time data on all sorts of weather parameters.

We got a brief shower yesterday afternoon. Apparently spawned a few tornadoes up north of town, but not much here but some dark clouds and about 0.05" of wet. Certainly hoping we get more over the next few days.

I tried to turn my disappointment into opportunity this morning though by broadcasting sunflowers into a little 4,000 sq. ft. clearing I made during the winter. It's a lot of bare dirt that has been under the cover of heavy cedars, so if I don't get something good growing there it's going to become a dandelion patch in a hurry. (ultimately I want it in white clover, but won't plant that til this winter.)

TPWD has closed some of Palo Duro Canyon and all events for tomorrow are canceled. With more rain forecast, doesn't seem like it would be a good weekend to go.

Saw in another thread that Aggie00 has headed to Big Bend instead. We're cloudy today, and a good chance of rain trough Monday.

Love PD Canyon, this weekend is probably not the best one to go, however.

We finally got some real rain this morning about 4:30a.m. It's still raining slightly and I'm drinking coffee laced with whiskey so I haven't made it out to check the rain gauge yet.

It was a nasty little storm that woke me up, followed by light pattering rain all morning that was good for laying in bed and being lazy.

We were expecting big rain in Wichita Falls last night, not a drop. More is forecast for us this weekend though. I'm in Lubbock this weekend, and they are getting some good rains in the area. Keep your fingers crossed.

Looks like 6/10 this morning so far. Forecast shows another pretty good storm moving in around noon.

I would gladly take another 1/4" a day for the next 5 days (which would just about reach our estimated 7 day rainfall based on the Map on page 1 of this thread).

Then again, I'd take another 8" too! (fify)

11:30 am:

1.9" the last two days in the city, 2.29" on the nearest school net site to our farm.

Did we need it? Boy, did we.

Amarillo paper
quote:
The 43 months from October 2010 through April are the driest months on record, exceeding drought conditions during the Dust Bowl era of the 1930s and extreme drought conditions during the 1950s, meteorologists said.

As of Thursday, all counties in the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles remain under Exception Drought D-4 conditions. A D-4 rating on the U.S. Drought Monitor is indicative of a once-in-50-year drought.

Amarillo’s precipitation level remains about 3 inches below normal for the year, meteorologist Andrew Moulton said Thursday night.

How about Borger/Fritch/Dumas/Meredith watershed? I know it isn't going to make much if a dent in the lake, but the surrounding area could definitely use it. Keep us posted on that area.

Log, refer back to the daily and weekly intellicast estimates of precip on page 1. Looks like a good 4 inches north of Tucumcari, which is good. Meridith has shown only a tiny uptick so far.

It's going to take a lot to wet the soil, then a lot more to cause runoff, a lot more to fill all the stock tanks and playas, and another shot to fill creeks and start heading water to Meredith.

We've a long way to go yet.

Log,

Looks like around 1-1.5 for that area yesterday:

http://water.weather.gov/precip/save.php?yday=1400889600&yday_analysis=0&layer[]=0&layer[]=1&layer[]=2&layer[]=3&layer[]=4&layer[]=5&timetype=RECENT&loctype=WFO&units=engl&timeframe=last7days&product=observed&loc=wfoAMA

The image comes from this page, which might be helpful to bookmark. Gives the same information that Canyon has linked from intellicast.

water.weather.gov/precip/

You can select last day, week, month, etc to get totals. Change the radio button to 'NWS WFOs' to zoom in to your local area. West Texas WFOs are:

Amarillo (AMA)
Lubbock (LUB)
Midland (MAF) - covers the Trans Pecos region
San Angelo (SJT) - covers Abilene
Austin/San Antonio (EWX) - Hill Country
Norman (OUN) - covers Wichita Falls area
Fort Worth (FWD) - covers Brownwood/Mineral Wells, etc.

It'll only have the rainfall totals through the previous day (radar estimated). Updates around noon or so with the previous day's info.

NWS Lubbock also publishes a table of climate data every morning that'll have some point totals:

Dangit ABatt!! Stop moving your map south and east! Don't be sending our rain to Looseyanna!!

While I'm sure those coon asses need a good bath to wash away some funky smells, we need rain in Kansas to make all of the corn for the OBers deer feeders!!

We were supposed to be rain free until late tonight but I just got chased away from planting a couple of trees by a driving rainstorm. Probably no more than a tenth or so, but in a very short time.

Pretty decent puddling for a 10-15 minute storm.

The last two rains have definitely perked things up a bit. The bulk of today's storm moved through North of my house (up the creek) and it made a noticeable difference.

This is the most water I've had in the creek in almost 2 years.
