Hope it expands in every direction so we can ALL get a decent amount of rain for once.

We have a lot of 30-40% forecasts in the next 10 days or so. I'd be really happy to get 3 or 4 of them to move to 100%.

We need rain so desperately to replenish the lakes...........and we have severe watering restrictions in North Texas. We lost a lot of grass over the winter and can't replace it until the restrictions are lifted.

We are 30" of rain behind in Hansford county. Our annual rainfall total is 17". Need 2 years of rain in next 6 months to break drought according to NWS. Incredible.

I'd love some rain, but I'm still waiting on windows that got broken out by the freak hail storm a 2 months ago. Looks like I'll need to make sure the plastic is water tight.

So ABatt has actually managed to link a picture that is updated every day!?? That is well done sir.

...and it looks like my rain forecast has gone up from about 1.5" to closer to 3". That will be well received here locally.

These are 7 day estimates. Nothing started out here in the Panhandle yet. First showers tonight, maybe.

I've accidentally done that. Some sites, like Intellicast, use the same name for the current image, so it is constantly updated. For instance, the radar image centered in Roswell, NM. I'll see if I can link and if it will change.

0.30" outside of Amarillo/Canyon last night. Hart had just over an inch. Palo Duro Canyon had around 0.70". Most of the rain was concentrated from Clovis/Portales to Claude.

plans were to go to palo duro this weekend, but looks like we might be changing those plans. Making the call this evening, but not really wanting to spend 3 days in a tent waiting out thunderstorms.

I know you guys need the rain, so i'm trying not to complain...too much

Not a good plan right now. Not only are you likely to get rain, but flash flooding is a possibility.

Sorry, I'm a big booster of PD Canyon, but this might not be the best time to come.

yeah, we're pretty bummed. never been up there, as we usually opt for BBNP or GMNP. We finally made the decision to go.

i've been watching the forecast for over a week and its not improving. we may just head back out to big bend.

happy you guys are getting the rain though.

i assume mid-june would be essentially baking in the sun up there? we had a big bend trip scheduled, so there is the option to swap trip dates. at least out west, we can stay at elevation to escape some heat. I assume the canyon heats up and stays that way?

The differences between PD Canyon and Austin are altitude and dryness. So yes, it can get darn hot. But we are high and dry, so usually the evenings and nights are nice and cool. For instance, the normal high for 15 June is 88 degrees, though the (record) range is from 107 to 65. And the normal low is 61, with a range of 48 to 72.

So even on the hottest days, it cools down 25 degrees or more at night.

In the Canyon, it can get a little hotter, it's 800 feet lower than Amarillo (where the temp numbers come from) and you're shielded from the wind, which can be good or bad.

A bonus of coming in June is you can take in the outdoor drama Texas. Kind of hokey, but a lot of fun.

If you guys are really wanting to hit PD Canyon, go for it. Just have access to AM radio at least, and tune 710am out of Amarillo for weather reports.

The typical way the storms come through is to build up with afternoon heating and blow through from the SSW to NNE. So your mornings ought to be dry, and the storms over by 9pm or so. So keep your head up, don't get into bad situations, you'll probably be fine.

If a flash flood is coming, the rangers will roust you out to higher ground.

Obviously, there is no way to predict, judge for yourself, etc. etc.

If it rains in the afternoon, drive into Canyon and visit the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, a really fine museum. Or eat at Fat Boys BBQ, Feldman's Wrong Way Diner, Pepitos Mexican, or our personal favorite, Sayakormarns. It's on the square downtown, and the best Thai food you'll find anywhere. Really big city quality in a hole-in-the-wall.

Also can't recommend personally, as I have yet to go, but Palace Coffee, also on the square, has a really good reputation. They recently won some sort of coffee shop competiton that makes them one of the 10 best in the nation.

To whet your appetite, check out the Palo Duro Canyon Photo Contest

There are links on that page to the 2013 winners, as well as the 2012. I've got one in the 2012 contest.
