Bullmoose is preaching gospel about shooting the yellow jackets nest! I used to make a hobby of shooting into a nest, running as fast as I could around the house and then shooting them again. Repeat until all that is left is a yellowish/black stain around the nest. Once I tried to be slick and smash a small yellow jacket nest with a rolled up newspaper thinking I could outrun the ones I didn't kill. I was wrong!

Red wasps are worse than yellow jackets. Can't remember how bad honey bee stings are. Red wasps leave you alone, yellow jackets start trouble.

We have yellow jacket up here in Oregon, but their sting is mild compared to a proper Texan yellow jacket.

Asps trump all except for those miserable big red and black ants that didn't appreciate me parking my truck on their mound when I went catfishing under the Hwy 60 bridge over the Brazos one hot, humid night. I thought I was having a heart attack after one stung me on the chest! Deep Ben-Gay like penetrating sting that lasted for hours.

Got hit by an asp as a kid on an outdoors trip as it hitched a ride in our van and I dropped my hand on it. Sum***** that hurt like a mofo, welps and burning for quite a while.

Nothing for me hurt worse than getting a bumblebee sting to the small of the back while washing my car one day near some honeysuckle bushes. Holy hell that was damn near the worst pain I'd felt and that includes a **** ton of stupid sheet like shooting myself through the foot w a Benjamin .22 pellet rifle and many head wound stitches etc. Yeah I was kind of always getting into trouble.

The Tarantula Hawk has one of the worst stings in the insect world.' First time I saw one in my back yard I thought it was a hummingbird. Would not want to get stung by one of those bad boys.

well.. considering i get stung by red wasps, yellow jackets, and honeybees quite regularly, it depends on where u get stung…

a sting on my knee hurts for days… and i can't walk..

but scorpions are more evil than all three..

but yellow jackets hurt 10x more than a bee..

most i've been stung in one day was about 20-30 times.. by bees...

I'm gonna go ahead and say non of them tickle and it all depends on how your body reacts to the poison on how bad you think it hurts.

I was at the barbershop with my grandpa, had a can of soda and a bee flew into the can while I wasn't paying attention. I took a big drink of the Dr. Pepper and got the roof of my mouth lit up. It swole up so damn bad I had to walk around with my jaw hanging down bc I couldn't keep my mouth closed.

I found a red paper wasp while working in the attic this spring when I grabbed a ceiling joist it was sitting on. I could have sworn I grabbed a live wire instead.

I guess when I got hit by a scorpion about a year ago on my middle finger at the last knuckle, the damn thing didn't let me have all of the poison. I remember it feeling like a fire but with some pressure, a few 4-letter words, and smashing the sum-bit!$, the pain went away/was not over powering pretty quickly

Was up in the hills in western VA till about 6 months ago. They have these solid bright yellow hornets/ yellow jackets. They are not very big, but man they are aggressive, they swarm. I've only been zapped once while mowing (my shoulder), but it felt like someone shot me with a pellet gun. Burned really hot and lasted maybe an hour.

However, as someone mentioned here already, the Man-O-War is in a league of it's own. Had several run in's with them as a kid and even a few as an adult. Horrible.

Red wasp sting is much worse.

I once laughed at my BIL when I saw him get stung by a red wasp. Years later it happened to me and then I knew how he felt.

I have been stung by yellowjackets many times and none of them can even come close to the one time I got stung by a red wasp.

Cicada Killer is supposed to be one of the worst, but you have to grab them to make them sting you. 1/4" stinger!

Setting up camp at Inks Lake State Park a couple of years ago. Stopped to get a drink of my Dr. Pepper and discovered that a honey bee was getting a drink at the same time. Stung me on the end of my tongue. Felt like I drank fire! Lesson learned.... always check the straw before you drink.

Ive been stung by an Asp. Worst pain ever from a critter.

I have also bumped a tree with yellow jackets in it while shredding. I never realized it at the time it happened but about 2 seconds afterwards it felt like someone hit me in the back of the neck with a 2x4. Seriously. It didn't hurt for very long, but that first sting really has some punch.

Haha. I got stung inside my lip last summer in Hawaii. Got to walk around Maui with a fatlip for about a day and a half. For a honey bee, I'll admit it was rather uncomfortable.

Reds > > large yellow jacket> little yellow jackets. I am referring to the yellow jacket paper wasp variety, not the true ground dwelling yellow jackets.

Also reminds me of one of the scarier outdoors incidents I've experienced.

Me and a buddy were bass fishing from a canoe in SETX, just letting the wind carry us around. I was looking down, trying to get a lure tied off when I hear my buddy in a no-BS voice say "DON'T MOVE!" and I feel the canoe starting to slow down.

Very slowly, I tilt my head up and look out of the corner of my eye and notice we are drifting into a cypress tree. (I'm fully expecting to see a cottonmouth at this point) Hanging from a limb at eye level is a nest teeming with red wasp. I didn't move---I didn't breathe. I can hear my buddy reverse paddling, but I am within arms reach, face to face with a couple of dozen wasps for what seems like several minutes (actually only about 10-15 seconds). My rod was within a couple of inches from hitting them before we started gaining distance. Considering my track record with stinging animals, I still don't know how I didn't get stung.

Still kinda makes me nauseous to think about. Pucker factor 10/10.

Personally
Bumble Bee > > > Red wasp > Yellow jacket > Honey bee > 20 Fire Ants

I thought I had been shot in the thigh when I got stung by a bumble bee as a teenager. Never saw the basturd, but I wear a permanent scar on my right thumb where I raked an exposed blade tip trying to slap the bumble bee. So many things happened and causing pain at once it was mind boggling.

My brother would put Asp > > > Bumble bee. After he brushed against one and my brother could stand firmly again the Asp was vaporized by his 12 gauge. Never seen so much pain from a fuzzy caterpillar.

Been stung on the arm a number of times. Initial bite was not that bad, but it was painful later and there was some swelling. Got stung by one in the hand and it was like someone jabbed an electrified ice pick through my hand. Had shooting pains up my arm followed by numbness followed by major swelling of my whole hand. Not sure why it was so much worse on my hand than my arm. I killed that one and all his friends.

10 years old, putting on bathing suit after letting it dry over the tub from the previous day and Mr. Scorpion happened to be in the mesh area and stung me right at the base of my crown jewels. Swole up real good. Pain was intense, but the worst part was the eventual embarrassment of running around naked all through the house and yard holding my pride and joy.

Honey bee hurts a little
Yellow jacket hurt a little more
Red wasp hurts even more

Bumble bee felt like someone drove a 60D nail into my back.

Don't know or care to know what a cow killer or asp feels like.

When I was a kid, I found a big yellowjacket nest under the floor of the second story of our playfort. I got the brilliant idea to build a huge mudclod, and throw it up with both arms and "encase" the nest in mud, including all the YJ's on it. Well, it sort of worked. Problem was, as the clod encased nest fell to the ground, about a dozen YJ's came free and went right after me. I killed each one by crushing it as it was stinging me. Took about 10 stings. It was unpleasant, but I coudl tolerate it.

Best was my cousin that was in the hill country at Garner SP one summer and forgot to put a rock on the mouth of his coke can. He came back and took a swig and got a mouthful of angry bees, and took several stings inside his mouth.

Cicada Killer, been popped twice and both times my ankle and lower leg swelled up it look like someone stuck a baseball under my skin. I've been stung by yellow jackets and bee's many times, but the pain and swelling is not even comparable.

It's like when you used to roll up a towel and popped your buddy, but with a damp towel that sounds like a cracked whip. It's that kind of pain.

The first time walking my two dogs on back trail, the second time I was fly fishing. The first pop I thought I had been bitten by a copperhead or timber rattler, the second I pretty much knew what it was.

Yall keep saying yellow jackets have "nests".

So, I must be wrong about what used to live next to me. Which are the ones that live in holes in the ground and they have hives of like 50-100+? Hornets? That's what we had near us in Blacksburg.

They have almost neon yellow tales. And they absolutely hate lawn mowers.

Had a tarantula hawk fly into me riding a four wheeler down a dirt road. I was hurting so bad I thought I had been shot. It was a combination of pain unlike any I've ever felt.

To this day, I still have to fight the urge to hop in a vehicle and lock the doors when I see one. That one made a believer out of me.

Don't get me wrong, it hurt initially when I got popped by the asp. Pain at the site I could deal with. It was when the pain started radiating up the arm and into my chest that it really got my attention.

In two separate incidents I was stung by 17 yellow jackets (all over), and 5 red wasps (on one hand). The red wasp incident was much more painful.

Another time I got stung by a yellow jacket on the eye lid. Went out that night with my eye swollen shut like I got popped. I got many looks that night.

Ironically a lady was just swarmed by bees across the street from my dad's house in Rockport. She got lit up real good. The best thing you can do in a situation like this is run like a mofo. If you jump into a body of water, swim under the surface for a considerable distance before reemerging. Otherwise they will just be there waiting for in numbers.

This thread is cracking me up. Bumble bee and red wasp are the two worst stings by insects that I have experienced.

My worst overall "outdoors" pain was when a buddy and I went fishing in the brazos. We caught about four nice blue cats all around 15-20 pounds. We decided we would keep them and have a fish fry. The truck was a good ways away and up a really steep bank, so to haul these fish out we decided to run a stick through their lips and each grab an end to carry the 60-80 pounds of fish to the truck.

Well we got about halfway up the hill and the stick broke in half and one of the catfish's pectoral fin shot into my calf about an inch. I had to slowly pull the fin out of my leg like you see people do with arrows in the movies. My calf went numb and I literally couldn't stand up or walk. I had to sit their for about half an hour until I could finally put a little weight on it and was able to limp to the truck. I spent the next week limping around pretty good.

Mesquite thorns hurt pretty good as well if they get you deep enough.
