Gents, facing the difficult, but inevitable, decision of putting a 14 year old pooch down. Would like to bury on the land and asking any with experience how deep to bury to prevent scavenging by coyotes etc. Appreciate any inputs/experience.

One foot of dirt on top is plenty, long as it doesn't wash away quickly. Condolences for the loss.

I used a cinder block for a stone.

Dig by hand and you will find it much easier to get over the loss by the time you've finished.

Sorry for your pending loss.

Several years ago my dad buried ourchildhood lab under a tree near their house. He buried it with about 10"-12" on top. Our jack Russell dug him up and drug his spinal column around for all to see. Go deeper.

2 foot and a bag of lime has always worked for me

When my parents had to put down our 13yr old lab when I was a kid they dug a hole about 3ft deep and built a fire in the hole to seal the edges and then placed her in the hole with her blanket she laid on everyday while the fire was still going to cremate her. They then planted a dogwood tree in the place as a memorial.

Looking back I remember the day coming home from 6th grade and finding out the news and still remember talking to my grandpa on the phone while watching them lower her down.

3ft for our labs haven't had any issues with varmints or the other dogs digging them up.

Put ash on top and that will help cover the scent.

Don't have anything to add other than sorry for what's going on. I bet you gave that dog a hell of a life.

My heart goes out to you. Usually about two feet of fresh dirt. I always put some large paver blocks across the fresh earth. It keeps the riff-raff out. Whoever said "digging the grave helps with the healing process" is correct on my account. It seems to help me close the loss of a friend.

I had coyotes dig one up once, the next time I poured a little diesel on the carcass and had no problems.

I saw a horse buried in a pit dug by a back hoe once. Coyotes dug 2+ feet trying to get to it.
They didn't make it but they sure tried.

1 ft isn't deep enough.

Sorry to hear about your loved companion. We had ours cremated and planted a tree over where we buried the remains.

As deep as you can is the answer. Not an enviable task, sorry to hear.

We have ours cremated, though it cost a bit. The dogs we lost that we buried when I was a kid were about 3 feet deep. Give them an undisturbed rest.

Good to be thinking of it now. Sorry for the loss you'll have to face.

Place the body in a black garbage bag, and go at least 3 feet of dirt over the top.

The garbage bag will really help with keeping the scent down. It might not be poetic, but it is a lot cheaper than a coffin.

Geez!

I had my best bud cremated a few years ago and buried the ashes at the base of a dogwood tree in our front yard as a memorial.
