This is in the "sweet spot" area, so there are a lot of hydrocarbons to burn. Hope everyone saw signs of it coming and made it out OK.

Had drive around to get home. FM roads are shutdown through there.
If people are familiar with that area, it is near Hillbilly Hill.
In-Laws just had 2 wells go online this afternoon and we saw the smoke when building fence and thought something happened to theirs. They are right on the Guadalupe River in that sweet spot.

Yeah, Lewis rig was off 83. Just several miles from our lease. Here's a pic...

Believe it was a Nabors Rig on an EOG job outside of Shiner.

The rig explosion was in western Lavaca county, between Yoakum and Shiner.

this is only funny because nobody was injured...

quote:
A nearby resident, who asked not to be identified, said her husband was in the front yard with their 4 year-old son at the time of the explosion and saw workers running. When he asked workers what happened the workers kept running so he too grabbed their son and ran, she said.

I heard they had just finished running casing and were starting to cement.

SD, I haven't heard what it was but figured it was what you said. Judging by reports that Halliburton was on location, ill make that assumption.

ag_pete09, They were interviewing a random "roughneck" from the rig and he was indicating there was a leak in the cellar and cellar was filling up with mud.
Makes one wonder if had a loose connection, were trying to rig up choke line or no casing rams and hydril would not hold the bubble they brought off bottom.
It will be interesting. They are all in the "cram and ram" mode right now, maybe this will cause them to step back and look at what they are doing. Just glad no one was hurt!! Could have been really bad!!

texaggie02 was that on the Spohn ranch?

Not 100% sure what ranch.

What ranch is your lease on?

One of the Briscoes

Doesn't EOG always take the shortcut of removing the BOPs while cementing?
Uncle Nasty
How long do you want to ignore this user?
we share a fence line with one of the Briscoe's ranches...your pic looks like it was taken on the county road going into the old Spohn ranch which a part of belongs to the Briscoe family

The Briscoe ranches are down south in Dimmitt county, at least all the ones I've been on.

This one is up near Shiner and Yoakum.

I wonder if they were drilling in an area that was recently frac'd? That will give you trouble.
Uncle Nasty

Just keep headed down 83 where it intersects with 44 in Webb County...more Briscoe ranches there as well...

The pic that txaggie02 had looked an awful lot like the county road on our place...we are leased out to Lewis as well.

There is a ton of Briscoe ranches. They sure are reaping the rewards now on their land investment from way back in the day.

That Lewis rig is on Gates but you are in the right area. It is not the current Spohn, but Spohn country.

Motis B Totis, I have not heard that but it sure looks like they made some miscalculation here. Maybe they just had them "4 bolted" and were getting ready to pull them as soon as they finished cementing. A buddy of mine told me they did not circulate while going in the hole "cram and ram" and that would give them a good bubble coming off bottom when they did circulate or pump casing volume and start cementing.
These guys have cut a lot of days off of drilling, but you get to a point you can't cut much more without doing dumb things!! Looks like a dumb thing here unless there was an equipment failure on this one!!

Deer Dude...is it on the Middleton or Long Ranch in Spohn country?
Uncle Nasty

Just re read where you said Gates...not familiar with that ranch but you say it used to be part of the original Spohn ranch?

Some of these areas need intermediate casing to protect from depleted Austin Chalk or charged up highly naturally fractured Austin chalk. The Eagleford, without a frac, rarely has enough perm to do much, but yes, gas bubbles can catch one out if proper well control procedures and/or a flawed string of pipe or wellhead weld that won't pressure test is involved.

Post frac results in the area south of Gonzalez have proven to be some of the best wells in the play. We drilled two that were 500' apart that IP'd at over 8000 BOPD with 24 stages of fracs each.

Not the Long. I'm an NPRI there

The Lewis rig is on the Worthy ranch. Made some calls yesterday about this as Lewis is active on my place. The blowout is north of Long, north of Galvan, and NW of Strait's place.

Sorry for passing misinformation.

Thanks Deer Dude...We share fence with the Long and some minerals.

Slaughter/Hamilton is our place

Cool, we'll have to get together some time down there. You ever eat at Ricardos Fine Dining, ( our name for the Recreation Center) in Encinal? I'm the A. G. Long NW of Encinal. I'll have to look at DO's on the wells.

Back when acquired by great grandfather that piece was named the Hamilton pasture, and we still refer to it that way.

Oh man, you boys talking about the 5* establishment called Richards? Haha! We always stop in there for a couple beers on our way to the lease. We are just 9 miles west of there on 44.
Deerdude
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That's the place, hence, "Ricardos Fine Dining". It doesn't get any better. Where else can you go with a building in such disrepair? But the beer is cold, and I've never been sick.Burgers and onion rings are good.
