I typically buy HEB brands when given the choice. I love HEB. Tonight I bought some HEB stuffed crab only to discover it had imitation crab meat in it. Pretty lame HEB.

OB related because imitation crab is some sort of fish and gluten product and they once lived outside.

Did the stuffed crab seem like a really good deal? Like too good to be true? Probably imitation meat then.

I don't buy tilapia anymore either. Most is from China. F that. US farm raised catfish for me instead.

It was five bucks for two crabs..didn't seem outrageously cheap to me...it still good though!

I always thought that imitation crab meat was some coldwater fish that tasted kind of like crab.

It's called surimi. Typically made from walleye pollock. Really cheap fake crab is made with hake, but that usually heads to Japan.

HEB's "stuffed crabs" utilize imitation crab meat. However, their crab cakes usually are made with the real thing. There is a definite difference in price, which is usually quite telling.

And their queso dip in the dairy section is terrible. It's like sour cream with a faint hint of Rico's fake cheese sauce mixed in. Other than that, 99% of their stuff is good to outstanding.

OP, do you live in your mom's basement? If so, you should love imitation crab meat.

Their ravioli sucks ass.

If it makes you feel better, the real crabmeat at HEB is so full of shells I've never been able to use it. I have to buy my crab from Costco or Groomers

I've never understood the love for HEB. I live in DFW, so other than Central Market, I don't get to shop at a "typical" store, but I grew up in Corsicana and we had two stores...an old, tired Brookshires that all the white people shopped at and a new HEB that all the dark people shopped at...I just assumed that's how it was across the state. I guess things have changed since then.

FIDO, HEB is leaps and bounds ahead of Kroger/Tom Thumb/Randall's. Better brands, better produce, better protein. And it's a Texas company.

I am getting tired of HEB clearing out out all the National Brands to make room for more freaking HEB brands. There may be one shelf for Promised Land Milk and its empty then 5 doors worth of HEB milk completly stocked. Can't hardly get a decent wing sauce cause freaking HEB decided to do their own and cleared out all but about 3 others. I like some HEB stuff, jsut don't try to force me to buy your crap.

I'm with Gwellis. I'm sick of them forcing their brand down my throat. I spend $1 more on Borden milk just because it pisses me off that half the time they just let other brands run out of stock and do nothing. I can't count how many times they have only had heb butter. It just sucks because we have very few other options in south Texas.

HEB may be a Texas company, but that embarrasses me because of my Texan heritage and belief that people like HEB should be in jail.
I am sure to some on here this will be just good business, but I live in a small town where HEB is the only store.
All prices run 20-25% higher than places where they have competition! They do not care, old store, no service, limited selection but what you going to do? Drive 35 miles to buy grocery's!!
And the Hill Country Fair, HEB house brands, most are ok, some are better than the major brands, but damn give me a choice. Another thing you have to watch is when they drop a product (in this case Kraft Cheese) Hill Country Fair is MORE EXPENSIVE than the Kraft cheese, but no Kraft to choose from.
I am a man...an older man at that but I am B****ING about HEB and I don't need Midol. I freaking HATE HEB, I THINK THEY ARE THE ABSOLUTE SCUM OF THE EARTH AND LOWER THAN WHALE POOP ON THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN!!!!!
