With reference to giving Newt a gun:

"It's better to have it and not need it that to need it and not have it".

Gus and Pea, talking about the buffalo.
Gus: Ole Man Barlow was a slow thinker, kind of like someone else I know.
Pea: He was a slow walker after that buffalo got through with him. I wonder whatever happened to him?
Gus: He married a fat widder and raised a passle of kids up on the Blanco, and you might as well do the same...if you don't wanna chase buffalo.
Pea: I like being a bachelor.
Gus: That's fine Pea, I'm sure it's all part of Gods plan you are one.

Walking away from the bar in San Antone
Gus: It ain't against the law to whack a surly bartender

At the breakfast table
Gus: You're in over your head, Pea

Not a direct quote but inscribed inside my wedding ring
Forever, Lori Darlin'

Wife and I also have two beagles, Gus and Woodrow

The boys and cattle had just found water after a long stretch of nothing to drink. They were all relaxing by the water. Gus was in the river wearing nothing but his hat and smoking a cigar. Call rides up and says the indians have stolen some of their stock. He asks Gus "Are you ready?" Gus stands up and yells, "Hell yes I'm ready Woodrow. Don't I look ready?" All of the cowboys look down at him and start laughing. Every time I hear that part I start laughing to.

quote:
There are plenty of real names smattered into Lonesome Dove as well. I'm sure Larry McMurtry got a lot of ideas from early Ranger accounts, and I can almost guarantee you he used Early Settlers and Indian Fighters of Southwest Texas as a research tool to flesh out his characters.

The main characters were based on Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving. Lots of incidents taken straight from their lives, such as Goodnight taking Loving's body back to Texas for burial.

On a related note, I visited Goodnight's final home and gravesite this past weekend. I'll get some pics up and link to them later.

Last summer, I had my internship supervisor tell me watching lonesome dove was part of the requirements to get a full time job at the end of the summer. He lent me his special edition DVD and loved it. Needless to say, I got the job.

Oh and to comply with the thread, I know it's already been said but,

a man who would cheat for a poke don't want one bad enough

Gus McCrae: [Looking at a herd of buffalo, such as hadn't been seen in Texas for many years] Pretty, ain't they?
Pea Eye Parker: I reckon
Gus McCrae: Let's chase 'em. You want to?
Pea Eye Parker: Shoot us one for our supper?
Gus McCrae: No, I mean chase 'em just for the sport of it
Pea Eye Parker: to run them off?
Gus McCrae: You don't get the point, do you Pea? I mean chase 'em, because before long, there won't be any buffalo left TO chase

I use "Shriveled my pod" and "set my post" quite a bit at the house. The wife never finds it as funny as I do.
