Thought I would get advice from y'all for my Daughter. She turns 15 in May and wants a job in the summer and part time after.

We are having trouble finding places that hire 15 year olds.
Any tips?
We are in Flower Mound. (Dallas suburb)

She's smart, responsible, hard worker. She is ... the opposite of my younger Son. : )

She doesn't have much experience. Babysitting mostly, but she did work at the FM Pumpkin Patch this past fall. 12 hour shifts.

She wants to get a hardship drivers license just so she can work.

Any advice??

Buy her a push mower, weed eater, and a gas can. Seriously...my dad did this for me when I was 13. He posted signs all over town (very small town) for $20 any yard. First 10 yard's payment went to him to pay for the gear. I am forever grateful for that.

Chic fil a did til last year. Now you have to be 16.

I checked online and there some rules against hiring minors, but she should still be able to work there.

She has been going to different places and talking to managers, handing out her resume. It actually looks pretty good.

She actually got a job offer on the spot from an ice cream store. He said, can you start Thursday? Told her she would work open to close by herself.

Mind you she is 14 right now, and she told him, "I'm still in school til mid may." He told her he would make a note of that and call her then.

He was a little creepy, didn't speak English well, so she will probably pass on that.

She actually tried to start a mowing business a couple of years ago. She mows our yard for money. Has since she was probably 10 or 11.

She ran into problems of doing it during the school year with after school activities. And most people had already hired someone that was mowing for 2 months by the time she got out of school.

Not an excuse, just maybe not the most viable option. But we are definitely keeping it as an option.

I worked at a pet shop when I was 14. Worst decision my parents ever made. My mom FREAKED when she found the snakes/aquariums and the heat lamp in my closet.

Diet, she is open to that. She has started swimming laps to help with the test.

To say she is Type A is putting it mildly.

I knew a guy who worked at Chick Fil A when he was 15 back when we were that age, you might see if they still do that or if they've changed their policy.

Ditto on the lifeguard comment. Pay is good (relatively).. Daughter started doing that the summer she was 15. Responsible kids will never have a problem finding a job.

I started life guarding at 15. As far as I know, it's the only job you can get at 15.

Well, here is what I just found out about the lifeguard jobs

High School Diploma or GED is preferred. CPR/First Aid and Lifeguard Certifications are required. Must be at least 16 years of age. If you have a valid Texas driver's license, driving record must be in compliance with Town policy OR you must have reliable transportation.

The lifeguard companies will usually offer the CPR/first-aid and lifeguard training prior to the season. I was a lifeguard at 15 and still remember my mom dropping me off or walking if it was one of the nearby pools.

I hire 14's and 15's for fast food but there are a few requirements/restrictions. You can not work them legally over 8 hours in a day. They must be clocked out by 7 pm on school days, even if it is a holiday, and 9 pm on non-school days. They can also work only 28 hours a week.

Best of luck with it. The system seems to punish good young employees that want to work, in the interest of protecting them.

I worked at a golf course when I was 15 - did whatever the superintendent needed or trusted me to do. Some days it was just driving a cart hole to hole and raking sand traps, some days setting pins, general maintenance.

Serious note, local small businesses would be your best bet. As my father in law would say, "Go to the ones you trade with!"

my first job was working at a feedlot for my dad. that wasn't fun.

I don't have any contributions to the thread other than the fact that I had a buddy in high school that mowed 22 lawns every week. He saved his money every year and had about $40,000 in the bank when he graduated high school from that alone. On top of getting some money for a settlement in a lawsuit that he got when he turned 18 he had him a very nice new Z-71 to take to college. He then ruined his life by attending Baylor and now he's a dentist.

Flower Mound and Lewisville require 16 to be lifeguard.
I just saw Grapevine is 15. I'll check into that one.

Golf Courses are a good idea. I'll look into those.

There is a company that teaches swim lessons at the 24 Hour Fitness by our house. They have some pretty young kids as instructors. Pretty sure they are a nationwide company. Safe Splash is the name. Might be worth checking into

Have her start a Pet Care service where she takes care of pets while owners are away on business or vacation. She can also walk and exercise dogs for pet owners that aren't available.

What about as an office assistant? I know lots of people in High School that did a similar thing at that age.
