Why is a cat any less of a pet than a dog?

A) Because it's a cat.

B) Let's think about what you just said - if it is equivalent to a dog, why was it outside, without the owner, not on a leash, unprotected? After all, they are on the same level pet wise as dogs, correct?

Pretty sure most leash laws cover cats too.

I would apologize to neighbor, offer to replace the cat under the condition the replacement feline remain indoors. Indoor/outdoor cats are heLL on ma nature, and in my opinion, unless a cat is used as a tool on a farm or in rural areas (re: mouser), then said cats should be confined to the interior of a home.

1. Send me the dog
2. Let it kill the cat pissing all over my place
3. Give it treats
4. Send you the dog back

Two animals were out, without a leash. Your animal won the fight. Nature happens sometimes.

Cats allowed to roam free. I have no sympathy for them.

According to the research, published today (Jan. 29) in the journal Nature Communications, cats kill between 1.4 billion and 3.7 billion birds and between 6.9 billion and 20.7 billion small mammals, such as meadow voles and chipmunks.

And, seriously, tell me what cat kills another person's pet (except for the occasional bird).. and then how many people have birds?

I'm really surprised that you aren't aware of the environmental impact that domestic cats have.

Domestic cats kill one million birds every day!

I was speaking in reference to cats killing other people's pets, not the total environmental impact they have. Of course I'd suggest having all cats inside.

Do the cat people get bent out of shape over the thousands of lizards, snakes, mice, birds and squirrels their cat kills?

FWIW, I have 6 dogs and 2 cats in my house (not my idea, wife's), and there are no dead cats. Collies don't tend to be cat killers, though they do enjoy the chase.

Sounds like you need to take the dog to obedience training and teach it to 'leave it.' Euthanizing for killing a cat is stupid and an emotional knee jerk reaction. You don't happen to be a liberal, do you?

No, I probably just feel that way because my brother almost lost his eye from an aggressive dog when we were kids.

Not a ton to add other than what's been posted. Apologize immediately, offer to replace cat, and get dog trained. IMO no need to euthanize; this wasn't a kid or another adult he went after. Also, with today's society, don't be shocked if they try and sue for something. Not likely but with the way people are today, you just never know. My wife is an isurnace adjuster and sees crazy lawsuits on a daily basis.

One less cat in the world. I just hope the owners don't decide to try and take you to court over it. I'd apologize to them (if you haven't already), but I wouldn't kill or get rid of the dog.

Nope, but we also don't get bent out of shape about all the possums, rats, etc that dogs kill.

We don't even know where the cat was. What if it was in the backyard, fenced in?

What if it was your dog, not on a leash, in your own front dog, and someone walking by's aggressive dog escaped the leash and killed tyour dog on your property? Would it be "**** it, it wasn't on a leash." No, it wouldn't.

What would Jim Stevenson say? I remember when this was going down and thought it was funny. All animals need population control.

Did the OP state where the cat was? Here are my Holiday Inn thoughts.

On Cat's property, Dog is in the wrong

On Neutral property and cat wasn't on a leash Both are wrong...

On Dog's property, no issues...

Gotta agree with schmellba on this one. Apologize, tell them it won't happen again, be on your way.

Yeah it sucks that their cat is dead, but they didn't show much concern for little Mr. Mittens while he was running around outside the house BEFORE he met your do. You let your animals run around loose, stuff happens.

Same exact thing happened to my brother about a year ago right after they moved into their house. He apologized sincerely and went on about his life. He consulted with my brother who is an attorney and a family friend who is a Texas Ramger Leiutenant and they both said he had nothing to worry about. Definitely don't put the dog down. A cat is barely better than a rodent! A few of my brother's neighbors said he did the neighborhood a favor by ridding them of that damn cat.

You need to let the cat owner know what steps you are taking to fix the problem. ASAP.

Our neighbors pit bull jumped the 6ft privacy fence to attack our terrier. Trust me when I tell you that the cat owner can make things VERY difficult for you if he chooses.

You are looking at legal damages, vet bills, cost of making your yard "safe", a visit from animal control, etc.

Bake them a cake and assure them they will never see your dog again.

Also, trust your gut. If you have a bad "feeling" about this dog, get rid of it.

What does a full vet exam on a dead cat run these days?

"Yep he's is dead" $200

Oh and if it was my cat and I wanted to hurt you...

http://www.abitofheaven.com/servpricing.htm Looks like about $2K

But I'm a dick like that.

When my dog was attacked, we had him under 24 hour observation for 5 days. Trust me, there are ways of running up the bill if you are so inclined.

Hypothetically, what if the cat was pure bred and actually worth money? Do you have to leash an animal if it is on your own property?

I don't give two ****s about someone else's cat, or really their dog for that matter unless it interacts with kiddos.

Would your dog attack a small child, or a kid riding a bike toward it, or a kid walking his yipyap dog, or someone in soccer shorts, on a skateboard/scooter or anything like that? It sounds like you have a pretty aggressive dog to actually kill the cat rather than bark, bite, or really hurt it. Would it do any of those things to a child? If you're not 100% sure, put the dog down.

I have two herding dogs, a kid on a skateboard is an opportunity to herd, a cat is an opportunity to chase, a running kid/s they love to run circles around. Would they bite, yeah our Sheltie will nip; buts thats what they do. Has she ever drawn blood, not on any human. Cats, squirrels, rabbits and one German Sheperd yep.

Dogs have been bred to perform a job of some sort, and yes most dogs if given an opportunity will kill cats.

Look, I'd let the owner know if that is possible but imo, your dog really only acted on instinct... Maybe your wife should look to upgrade to a harness if the dog only has a collar/leash combo...

Good luck, hope the owners of the cat aren't liberals!! And this is coming from someone who can't stand cats... Their fine hair suxs!!!!

Good lord this thread went BSC quick. Cats don't kill as many pets as dogs? No ****, that tends to happen when you're limited by the fact that most pets aren't small enough to die at the hands of a cat. Give me a cat the size of a lab and I'll give you a cat that could kill you pretty easily.

I live on a farm and own both cats and dogs, and one of the cats almost did meet his end one day when he went snooping in the backyard (which is the dogs' territory). Dogs had him so ****ed up he couldn't move for about a week. Didn't feel one bit of sympathy for that cat though, because cats should be smart enough to know how to stay away from a predator.

If my neighbors dog snuck onto my property and killed my cats, I probably wouldn't care that much, because the cats should be holed up in a safe place to begin with when they're not out hunting mice, birds, snakes, and insects. If they aren't fit to survive, they aren't fit to survive. Same thing for the dogs. If my boston gets out and gets dispatched by a coyote or a german shepherd without me having time to get the rifle / shotgun out, oh well. Dumb dog. Should have run faster.
