I must not understand how suppressors work; don't they thread into the barrel, ie the barrel is female the suppressor is male? Not on a male end?

How does being able to put a bolt into the threads of your barrel help?

Barrel is male. Can is female.

Backwards OFN.

The threads on the outside of the barrel allow the gun to be fired unsuppressed without a rifled bushing. It's not like a shotgun choke. They are also generally left hand threads.

that is correct and there is a company online that sells very similar adapters, but they market it for the purpose I am implying and they make it known that it is an NFA item. Apparently the adapter piece is what NFA considers the actual suppressor and the oil filter is what they call a "wipe" or a disposable/changeable part of the suppressor.

You could easily just buy that adapter and form 1 it though.

I love learning new stuff.

So with a 3D printer you could make a one time use suppressor...

interesting.

wish i had a 3d printer.

TR, figure out some kinda research that needs a 3d printer, then i need to visit stillwater. O BTW I'm gonna be in Norman teaching a fly fishing class feb 15th and 16th if you wanna grab a shiner and whip some sooner ass in 42.

The company that makes the legal oil filter suppressor adapter (cadiz gun works I think) also makes and sells some of these. Really not certain why though, I'm not going to thread every gun I own just so I can use a "solvent trap", and it seems like an awfully fine line to walk since they are almost identical to the oil filter suppressors.

I'm still thinking about going. I do have a trip on the 18th though, so I'd likely miss Sunday's game. I might just wait and catch a later game... maybe first SEC game @ Olsen.

Don't understand why suppressors are NFA items.

because they look scary, and in movie-land, they make guns go pfft instead of BANG.

They don't work anything like that well without subsonic ammo, of course.

It all depends on the round, the load, the platform, temperature, location, etc.

Most suppressors just make a gun less quiet. It takes a lot of work and special conditions to make even subsonic rounds Hollywood quiet.

It's weird to take a suppressed gun and shoot in one area versus another and just because of the surroundings you get completely different levels of suppression.

So how do you aim wth an oil filter suppressor? Seems like it would be to wide to use the sites?

Keep both eyes open and you can use the sights well enough.
jpb1999

Doesn't the diameter of the can stick up above the barrel/sites?

So your saying to just to not use the sites and to just line up the shot to the target?

schmellba99
How long do you want to ignore this user?
No, I am saying that even with the can above the sights, with both eyes open you can still use the sights fairly accurately. Not sure of the correct term (double vision?), but it is the same as looking theough a cardboard tube. Close the eye without the tube and your field of vision is limited by the tube. Open both eyes and you still see the outline of the tube, but have a normal field of vision as well.

I have. Multiple times. I just don't know how to explain it verbally well at all. It is not a hard thing to do, nor is it some super secret trick. If you keep both eyes open, you have 2 sight pictures and can easily use sights that are "covered".

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Most competitive pistol shooters shoot with both eyes open.

It's also standard procedure with red dot sites. You see the dot over the target and don't see the tube.

What he's saying does work.
jpb1999
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I understand... thanks for the explanation. Wasn't sure if you could still see around the "can".

Next question.

Forgive my ignorance, as I have never even thought about a suppressor before seeing this thread, but do you have to buy a gun with the threaded barrel?

ashleyschaeffer
How long do you want to ignore this user?
You need a threaded barrel.

Has me thinking about a threaded barrel for my sr22.
schmellba99
How long do you want to ignore this user?
On a. 22, you don't necessarily need a threaded barrel because the pressures are so low. It does make it easiser though.

On anything larger, you will need a threaded barrel. Luckily many manufacturers are offering factory threaded barrels these days.

Two eyed shooting. Almost movie quiet. Sounds like a small nail gun.
