I am going on a cow elk hunt in early Jan. Wife wants the hide tanned and use as a floor cover. This is considered appropriate and desired home furnishings in our house. I would apprecite any feedback on good or bad taxidermist/tanners in Houston. Thanks.

I have no recommendation, but I woldnt limit your options to local tanners. Dry ice and FedEx are pretty affordable if there's a preferable outfit elsewhere.
I use North Texas Tannery.
Elk hides a $7.75sq ft. They've done an excellent job with all the hides I have sent there before.
Turn around is 90-120 days though.

What should you do to the hide after skinning to preserve it until you get it to them?
Freeze it.
Just drop it off at your nearest taxidermist.
Thanks for all the info. We moved to Katy last year and I have been looking at tanners from SA to east of Houston. Any recommendations in west Houston?
Most taxidermists are going to ship it to North Texas Tannery anyway. Save yourself the markup and send it yourself.
For deer and exotics, I recommend The Nugget Company in San Antonio. Cost is $95, turnaround is 30 days.
However, according to their web site, elk is $16.50 per sq. ft., more than double according to the post above.

Just for reference, North Texas does white tailed deer for $32, axis are $35 IIRC.
Max, that seems idiotic on their part, seeing as axis hide is general the same size, if not smaller, than a whitetail.
