Hey guys
I was curious to see if any of y'all have ever leveled your lawns before? I recently bought a new home and our yard is about a month old. I have only mowed it 2 times and it seriously feels like I need to add some shocks to my lawn mower! It’s that bumpy and uneven!

I live in the Keller area in Denton County, about 5 miles east of Texas Motor Speedway. I read somewhere online that Denton County sells truck loads of top soils for $25-30. Would this be the best way to level it? Spread it out and work it into the tall grass with a rake?

Any other ideas?
Thanks for the help

You'll have better luck leveling with sand than topsoil. It will also be cheaper in bulk than topsoil. Throw it down and rake it in using the back side of a garden rake.

Larger holes should be filled with topsoil.

yep, slowly fill with sand and then rake to bring the blades up.. only do an inch or so at a time...

deats & todd

do either of you have experience with mixed forms of sand and top soil? I just called a place and they have a mixed washed sand and top dressing for $52 a cubic yard. They also have top soil and compost mix for $39 a pickup truck load. Their pickup load of sharp sand goes for $51 a cubic yard.

My grass doesn't have any big gaps or extremely low spots. It's just consistently uneven and bumpy.

Let me know who you get to bring you the sand/topsoil cause I need to do the same thing and I'm in your area. Heck, I could even help you level yours if you'll help with mine.

You're getting hosed.

Silver Creek Materials in West Fort Worth sells a Sandy Soil Mix (75% sand/25% compost) for $12.00 a CY.

Sand will promote drainage while allowing the grass to grow through better than compost or topsoil. Don't worry about adding organic matter. Your yard will produce enough thatch in a growing season to provide adequate organic matter with normal fertilizer applications.

Might try to run a roller over it first to level as much as possible before you break out the shovel and wheel barrow.

Hey OP, just briefly read your post. You need a mix called sandy loam (IMHO). Its cheap. I get it in Austin for about $35-40 per CY. Make sure they are using sifted materials. I haul it myself using a Home Depot rental trailer for $25 per day (about 3/4 CY) at a time.

A good lawn can take years to level. So stay patient. Make sure to just level a little at a time, or refer to your local turf distributor to see how much dirt/sand you can add without killing your existing turf.

We live in the keller area and had do the same thing. Fort Worth Grass & Stone on I35 at Golden Triangle is where we got ours. We used the sand/soil mix. Spread it with an 8 foot 6x6 inch cedar post drug behind a lawn tractor.

Amjones- I’ll let you know if I end up getting a load. Could be a few weeks though. It would be nice to plan this on a weekend when it wasn’t 107 degrees and a good chance a rain for the following Sunday or Monday

Thanks guys for the additional comments. I know this will be a work in progress, but I just wanted to take that first step

I laid sod in my back yard 2 months ago and sandy loam was ~$10-15 a yard (Truck bed load). $35 is nuts.
