how pathetic is it that all you hunters can't figure out how to kill a rat?

fwiw, I use a guillotine at work, however I know not everyone has one laying around so I suggest just breaking it's neck. Put a sturdy metal rod at the base of the skull and push forward while pulling backwards on the tail

Just put on a pair of leather gloves and grab that little bastage and squeeze.

both doors open at the same time. It would not be simple to reach in there and grab it. Not to mention risk of disease.

Maybe I can take him to a no-kill rat foster home service.

Seriously, the least-messy way to do this is to put the trap/rat in a garbage bag, then tie the bag to your muffler, rev the car, and give it five minutes.

Next thing we will be debating is the most humane way to kill a cockroach.

Unless you have a shotgun, just stab / crush the damn thing with a metal rod and be done with it. Not difficult.

they don't hold still in the trap, waiting to be crushed. They bounce around like a tasmanian devil in the trap.

It seems like we got a lot of guys here in this thread who in terms of killing rats are the equivalent of the guys who hold their pistols sideways when shooting......I'm on the front lines here, I gotta get the job done, no style points, no gangsta killing!!!

I just thought of another...

1. Drink a couple beers
2. Get a 3 wood
3. Get the neighbor or significant other to video this
4. While recording, look at the camera and say to the person recording "hold my beer and watch this."
5. Open the trap and unleash hell.

I live on a farm. I've killed more mice and rats in the last two years than you will ever see in your lifetime. You're really making it more difficult than what it is.

If it's moving around too fast to hit with a single metal bar, nail 12" spikes through a board the same size as the trap with the same spacing as the wire mesh. Then you can either slam it down or set up an elaborate balance that lowers it down as sand leaks out from the counterweight. Be sure to tell the rat your plan before walking away as the sand pours out.

I've seen and killed many rats, with implements at hand. I lived in a 3rd world country infested with rats. I hate rats.

I may just go with poison. In one of those boxes that bigger critters can't get in.

Either that or consult medieval texts.
