what's the easiest most humane way to kill a rat inside a havahart trap?

I would think drowning, but I don't have a container larger enough to place the trap wholly underwater.

I don't own a pellet gun either.

Fire is cruel and dangerous I would think.

go to walmart and buy a bb gun and a can of pellets... I would rather die by being shot in the head... drowning is pretty low on my ways I want to die list

Sounds like you need to invest in a .22 rifle and a suppressor.

or just get a snap trap rather than the live trap you then have to kill stuff later.

but this is outside and I'm afraid of getting other wildlife. I live on a creek.

Tie rope to trap, throw in creek. Retrieve after rat is dead.

not a deep creek, and it's not easy or fun getting through everythin to get into creek. Not to mention the 100 mosquito bites I would get. Also, these traps tend to open when they are manipulated and moved in orientation. I found that out this morning.

it's been a long time, but I've released squirrels before. Drove over to local park, got strange look from the Mexicanos watching me.

I've seen all used to dispose of mice and/or rats.

kill him with kindness. that's probably the most humane way.

What wunderbrad said. You can even whisper sweet nothings to it as it drifts peacefully to sleep.

You are worrying far too much about a rat, but just fill a garbage can with water and drop it in.

+1 for hammer. Use a thick glove to grab it out of the trap(maybe a welding glove or even bbq tongs) and give him a quick, hard tap on the head. Seriously, that will be about as humane as you can get.

I don't want to pass judgement, but I have a pretty low regard for people that consider drowning a 'humane' way to kill ANYTHING.

Id sooner let it out and take my chances throwing a brick at it than to cause it death by drowning. WTF is wrong with people?

If you don't have a pellet gun, you should have one anyway. That, or step on it with a pair of GD boots or something...anything else is just way too much work in my opinion.

I've killed rats in hand to hand combat. Once a rat is in the trap, it's not easy to "stomp it". They don't just sit there and wait for you to strangle it or stomp it or hit it with a hammer.

We got some people criticizing me for being too cruel, and others criticizing me for being a wuss. The garbage bag idea sounds like a decent way, except for being a huge PITA.

I guess I'm getting a pellet gun. I hope you guys feel good about yourselves when a ricochet takes my eye out!

(and yeah, I could sleep at night just fine drowning a rat)

Wear thick leather gloves. Grab by tail. Swing it by the tail and knock its head against the curb of the street.

This is how we killed them when I worked at a pet shop as a kid. (Snake food)

Takes only one or two good thumps and they're gone. And the first one will knock them unconsious 90% time.

90% of the time, it works every time.

The spouse went on a biology field trip. The point appeared to be catching desert rats and preparing them for display.

The professor insisted the humane way to kill the rats was like a boa constrictor. They would take the rats out of the trap, then squeeze their ribcage until the rat suffocated.

My wife suggested bag o'rats tied onto the van exhaust would work faster/cleaner/better. Prof looked at her in horror and said no. Wife asked why not. Prof answered:

"That would be cruel."
