I want to buy a gun to shoot hogs. I was thinking about a Marlin 336 30/30, because it is cheap and unlike any other gun i have, but i think a semi-auto would be better. i think i want something around .30 cal. suggestions for under a grand?

I know this is an odd suggestion, but a Ruger .44 or a Marlin Camp .45 both hit like a sledgehammer from inside 75-100 yards

Have you looked at semi-auto Saigas?
Come in 7.62x39, 223, 5.45x39 for about $350 and 308 for around $5-600.

I consider my Marlin 30-30 to be my hog gun. It will do fine for you in areas where the shots are under 100 yards.

If you are going to be over 100 yards, then something with a scope would do well. I don't know if you can get an AR-10 in your budget, but one of these would satisfy your caliber and semi-auto needs. You could also consider something like a Ruger semi-auto in 7.62x39, and shoot inexpensive European ammo for cheap.

I may have to give up my 30-30 at some point. The open sights are getting harder to see as I get older. I've been giving a lot of thought to a Thompson Center Contender lately.....

If by sledgehammer you mean not as hard as .223, you would be correct.

This is your excuse to get that Marlin 45-70 guide gun.

Real question is are we shooting hogs to clean or shooting hogs to eradicate them.

My AR dropped 2 hogs in their tracks, same sitting. Really depends what ammo you use. I've shot several with my .270 and they took off running. The .270 went straight through, the .223 exploded and destroyed the piggies.

Also worth considering is the 300 AAC blackout. Can push a 240gr projectile at subsonic speeds (awesome w a suppressor- can only hear the primer breaking) or a 125 gr projectile at supersonic speeds. All using the AR 15 platform.

I would love to get ahold of one of those Ruger .44 carbines. Almost snagged one at a gun show last year. But that will probably be my next firearms purchase.

i am looking for a gun to eradicate hogs. i have killed ten in the last year with 9mm, .223 and .243. i have a mini-14 and several bolts in various calibers (.223-.30-06).

last time deer hunting i had 6 big hogs come to the feeder and killed one and sent two more rounds from my .243 after the others. the problem i had is they didn't run in the direction i thought they would and it took a while for me to reacquire them in my scope. i am left eye dominant but was taught to shoot right handed. eventually i might change that but for now i think i need a semi and iron sights for quicker acquisition.

You need a Yugoslavian underfolder AK-47 in 7.62x39. Similar to a 30-30 ballisticly, 30-40 round magazines, cheap ammo, built like a tank, & is a super truck gun. It can also double as a zombie eradicated AND shoot subsonic ammo. This is BRILLIANT & I know a guy with one for sale... just saying
