Dimmitt recommendations?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Next weekend I get to make a little road trip out to the booming metropolis of Dimmitt for a wedding. We are staying in Childress on Friday, so we should be in Dimmitt fairly early. Any recommendations on a place to eat? I have speaking engagement on the 14th, so this is also a Valentine's get away (yeah, I'm quite the romantic and have a sneaking suspicion about it later-not in a good way).

My wife has never been west of Fort Worth in Texas, and we get to hit Dimmitt, Childress and Lubbock. So how I suspect she won't be overly impressed. I however am looking forward to seeing that country again. Haven't been out there when I wasn't looking for dead bodies (not kidding) since grad school.

So food--Dimmitt, Childress and Lubbock, please.

My wife is from lubbock so i spend some time there. Go to Tom & Bingos for a quick BBQ sandwich or Cagles for a ribeye when in Lubbock. Other than that, Lubbock pretty much has the same stuff as DFW...of course most of west Texas has the awesome-ness that is Taco Villa and Allsups!

I think the best bet in Dimmit is Subway. (No, I'm not kidding.)

Subway is good.

Anyone know if they still have the K-Bobs in Childress?

-Probably explains why they are hosting dinner in Lubbock

Yep, Still a Kbobs in Childress. Also one in Hereford if you want one a little closer to Dimmitt.

Not much in Dimmitt. We're not much better off in Hereford, but if you want a good burrito or plate lunch, try Burritos Plus in Hereford. Awesome burger (lunch-time only) at the Bowling Alley grill in the "mall" in Hereford.

Country out this way is not much to look at right now. In fact, it is awful. Have a nice trip

If the wedding is on Saturday (11th) and you speak in Lubbock on the 14th, you have time to look around a little. Frankly Lubbock/Childress/Dimmitt in mid-February is going to be pretty dismal.

Get up early on the 11th, take the Estillene-Turkey-Silverton route to Dimmitt. Eat lunch at El Camino in Tulia. At least one of your selection needs to be a chile relleno. You'll thank me.

And why Childress? Drive a little further and spend the night at Hotel Turkey.

After the wedding head back to Canyon and tour Palo Duro Canyon, or go back to Quitaque and tour Caprock Canyons. If the weather sucks, go through the museum in Canyon. See if you can reserve one of the cabins on the rim overlooking Palo Duro.

In Lubbock, tour the Ranching Heritage Center one of the few nice things about tceh.

Stop at Love's BBQ in Chillicothe (not to be confused with the Love's truck stops--not one there). Decent BBQ & outasight cobbler. Make sure you get the homemade ice cream on toop.

I'd love to add a day, but my speaking engagement is in Dallas. Childress because my wife is too much of a planner. Friday I have a landower meeting in the morning, and grandma isn't available until 3 pm to watch JR. On my own, I'd just head west and stop when the urge hit (ie roach motel or more likely curled up in my truck). My wife likes to know exactly where she is staying, so Childress. Second night we are staying in Lubbock after a post wedding dinner.

Part of the challenge is this is the first time that both of us has been gone overnight since Jr was born. So my wife is running through a 1000 what if scenarios. Good times.

Oooops. Totally mis-read. I thought you were in LBB on the 14th.

Still say you need to eat lunch in Tulia. And you'll enjoy the drive from Estelline to Silverton. Expect no services from Childress to Tulia, though you might get lucky.

If you manage to have extra time, you could do a quick drive-through at Caprock Canyons, but that's about all you'd have time for.

Cagels may be about the best you do in Lubbock.

Sorry, other than in the middle of a dust storm, this is about the worst time of year to be at 34 degrees N and 3900' MSL. Tell your wife to give us another chance sometime.

Don't know where you're staying in LBB, but Staybridge Suites on 19th is nice.

I ate at a steakhouse in Dimmitt two months ago. Don't remember the name but I am sure the locals will know it. It was a decent chicken fry.

Thanks for the info. I went to grad school at Tech, so I know what the area looks like. I told my wife at least we weren't visiting my family in Morton (they literally live in the middle of a cotton field). I just haven't been up there since 2001. I was in Lubbock briefly when the 2 teachers disappeared from the state school. But I spent the whole time in the IC or wandering around Swallowater.

El Sombrerro on the south side of town isn't a bad place to eat. Not fancy, probably something you'd like ok. There used to be a k-bobs, not sure if it's still there.

From my wife's cousin, who was a bartender there, Chimi's in Lubbock is supposed to pretty good. It's the hot spot for the Raider Rash crowd.

Powerbiscuit-a buddy of mine that worked for me as a tech in grad school. He's a Conservation Officer over in NM now.

Rodeway Inn is $40/night in Childress, as of 12/11. Cheapest chain in town, since I sprung for a night there on my doe hunt at Matador, since there were storms coming in overnight. Office smells like curry (dot, not feather) but the rooms were actually pretty decent.

There a good family restaurant east of the 287/62 interchange on the south side of 287. Think it was called Dawson's. Been a few years since I ate there, but I remember them having a good lunch buffet and a kickass chicken fried steak.

Check your anti-freeze and battery, it's getting down to 21 Saturday night in Lubbock. High barely above freezing.

Yeah, your wife is going to love the Panhandle. I bet she's going to beg you to move up here ASAP.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah, my wife totally wants to move to Abilene after I showed her around the zoo where I used to work. She kept on asking me "Where are the trees, and why does the wind keep on blowing?". She also asked me where the tumbleweeds were... oh, good times.

Course, I miss W. Texas. Spent a lot of time in the Ft. Davis/Sanderson/New Mexico area looking for snakes. Beautiful county IMHO. My wife thinks it looks too much like the Westerns her dad watches all the time.

the "wired rabbit" is your night life spot in Childress. hehehe. Dont forget your gun. Good people watchin.

CanyonAg77, yeah I saw that and already double checked. The fun part being my wife left Vermont because she doesn't like the cold. But this is a different kind of cold, so I'm sure she will just love it

Luckily I can count this thread as "planning".

I grew up in Dimmitt and Tulia, and funny enough, El Sombrero in Dimmitt & El Camino in Tulia were going to be my recommendations. I loved Mr. Burger when I was a kid, but not sure how good the food will be now.

Why are you staying in Childress? Why not Plainview?
ursusguy
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Mainly because I worked until about 1:30 last night, and not getting on the road until 3 or 4.

Plus, Childress used to be a traditional stopping point for me when I when back and forth to Philmont, so I just wanted to see it again. After the last time I stayed there (stayed a royal el cheapo), the place I stayed was condemned less than two months later.

I figured usurus was coming out of DFW, hence the trip up 287, not I-27.

And sadly, I have not seen a Mr. Burger for several years. I believe the chain bit the dust. Used to be one of my favorites, probably because the burger and the fries each had 200% of the daily recommended salt intake.

Today is a beautiful day, BTW. Too bad they won't get here until too late in the day to enjoy it.

I will have to say after getting used to Saltgrass and Hoffbrau, K-Bobs isn't quite what I remembered from grad school. But still not bad.

Canyon- we have Mr. Burger in Hereford, though I'm not sure if it is a chain or just a local joint.
CanyonAg77

There was a small chain, I think. The Plainview Mr. Burgers are gone, I'm trying to recall where else they may have been.

Agree with Canyon:

El Camino in Tulia
Taqueria Jalisco in Plainview
Nazareth a few miles east has two things: catholics and beer
Blue Sky in Amarillo (great burgers)
Taco Villa (fast food, but delicious)
Tulia also has a good new restaurant in the old DQ, just on the north side of town near the old Alco's (CanyonAg, do you know what it's called?)

Palo Duro Canyon
PPHM in Canyon

Thanks guys, Dawson's was a solid recommendation. Had a fun conversation with one of the local prison gaurds, and the Southwest plate was really good.

Sombrero is good, that's the place to go.

However, the Subway in Dimmitt is better than most.

Check out Menudo Bay. It's the city park on south side of town. Two acre pond probably has thousand geese on it.
ursusguy
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah we saw a bunch of geese on the south side of town. Saw a bunch of cranes near Springdale.
CanyonAg77

Springlake, not Springdale?
