I've got my rod and reel and now I need to know where to go. I've been a few times with my brother in and around Houston. Anyone have any recommendations around Temple?

When the weather warms up, check out the Lampasas River below Stillhouse Hollow. There's a park right below the dam. The water is usually clear and there are some good bass and sunfish down there (and carp, if you really want a challenge). Make sure the dam isn't releasing before going. I've been there when they started to release a ton of water, and the river went from wadable to cold and dangerous in about 5 minutes.

It's a bit of a drive from Temple, but the Brazos below Lake Whitney can be awesome. Largemouth, smallmouth, huge sunfish, and stripers (never caught any, but they're there). When Whitney Dam isn't generating, the water is gin clear and very wadable.

Not my neck of the woods but check out the Central Texas Fly Fishers. They'll tell you where to go.

You may also consider driving down to Austin and fishing the Colorado under Montopolis bridge. There are some BIG Guadalupe Bass down there. I caught one that was over 2.5 pounds.

This is also a bit of a drive but the fishing is worth it. You can also wade into the Lampasas river at the 195 bridge. These are both excellent places to fish.

Flyfishing Colorado Bend State Park in March and April for whites can be superb.

Probably won't be enough water this spring for the whites to get up that far.

Check out some of the creeks in the area. I've had surprisingly good luck on some really small water near Waco.

I'm always intrigued by Nolan Creek when driving over it on 190. Give it a try and report back!

You might try the falls park on the Brazos outside of marlin. Haven't been out there in about a decade, don't know how it looks.

Thanks for all the replies! I will be going Thursday or Friday of this week (hopefully). I will let you know how it goes.

If anyone in the Temple or surrounding areas is interested and wants to go let me know.

WhoopN06, where do you park for that location? I don't see any place from the sat image.

That is an old abandoned bridge in Maxdale. There is parking on either side of the river. When you get there you will see what I am talking about. At the 195 bridge you can park on the south side of the river underneath the bridge. There is a trail leading down off 195 that you can follow. You will see what I am talking about.

I am out of town currently but if you want a fishing partner sometime I would be more than happy to show you around out there. You can email at: softwareaggie at gmail dot com

Nolan Creek was stocked with trout mid december. I went down there with a fly rod but wasn't able to pull anything out.

WhoopN06, I will take you up on that offer. When are you going to be back in town?

coshatteag, when the kids get well hit me up on here and we can work something out.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

I got in right at downtown Belton. Parked behind the gin steakhouse and walked down. Varying depths up to about chest deep. There are a few holes if you aren't careful.

I would be interested in meeting up as well. Tpwd will stock again in feb according to their website.

Could this be the start of the "Official TexAgs Fly Fishing Club"?

I am up for meeting anyone. Next week? Tuesday is good for me. I work from 8A - 5P, but I am willing to take of a bit early if anyone is interested. My mornings are booked during the week and my next two weekends are booked, but the last weekend of the month I am fee...at least my wife hasn't told me that I am busy yet.

I fished Nolan Creek the week before Christmas and caught a couple of small trout, but I was only there about 30 minutes.

I think the fishing is only good for a few days after they stock, so you may want to try in Feb.

I thought about putting my kayak in at the 121 bridge and fishing down to downtown, but the water is still very shallow.

I'm up for it as well, but I'll wait until it warms up in March or April.
I live in G-town south of y'all.

By the way I caught quite a few Sand Bass blind casting in Lake G-town last spring down by the dam.

NW80- I don't know where specifically but I've heard of people doing well on the San Gabriel near Georgetown.

You can go the Texas Parks and Wildlife website and it will have a list of when and where trout were stocked in your area.

I will be back in town on Saturday. I should be able to meet up anytime next week in the afternoon. I don't fly fish but will show you where to catch them but this water is perfect for fly fishing. Maybe this is the perfect opportunity to pick it up.

Headed out Wednesday AM. Any suggestions on flies or presentation?

Whoop, I don't know if I will be able to get off early enough this week to get on the water before dark. Might have to wait till the time change in the spring for an afternoon trip.

Went to Nolan Creek in downtown Belton and the Leon River via Iron Bridege Park Wednesday morning. It was a blast but the fish wern't biting. Nothing on the Nolan and only 3 (a pearch and two small bass) on the Leon. I am hoping to get to go again soon. Maybe after it warms up a bit or just after the stock on the Nolan in Feb.

Anyone want to try to plan an outting?

LOL. Nolan Creek was known as "Turd Creek" when I was a youth in Belton. Have you tried the Salado Creek? Trust me - there were places with 7# + bass there at one time. A flyrod and some helgramites will yield bass and channel cat.

B-183, I haven't. Where is the best place to acces the creek?
rather be fishing
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'd say Salado Creek is your best option. You can also try "turd creek", TPWD used to stock trout in it in downtown, not sure if they still do. Also, I know they do continue to stock Lions Park in Temple.

You might ask at Summers Mill (between Belton and Holland). Too deep above the dam to wade, but lots of decent wading below. I used to have acces to miles of that creek ... but there was a reason for that. Different owners now.
