If you use WD40 it will eventually gum up the moving parts. If you use it, clean well with solvent soon and then use the right stuff !

While we're on the subject, I've heard great things about this stuff...

Haven't tried it myself, just wondering if anyone else has, and what you think of it.

I've heard of guns rusting after using WD40. You made the right call.

Knives of Alaska talks about using vegetable oil on some of their D2 steel knives. I think I would try some kind of kitchen oil (olive, canola, etc) before WD40 if I was ever in a jam.

WD 40 does gum up the works. I think the best water displacing oil is TriFlow. It also contains Teflon. Using a product like carb cleaner and Gun Scrubber are great for removing dirt and other gunk but they take all the lubrication off and are not real good for displacing water.

my dad used wd40 for 50 years.. His guns don't have rust.

That being said, there are far better solutions now days.

I just love the smell of wd40.. takes me back to being a kid.

Just an FYI...gunscrubber does have oil in it and leaves it behind as a residue.

Didnt know it myself until I used it in place of alchohol to prep a 3 Gun shotgun receiver to add some velcro for a shell carrier. Stuff wouldnt stick...called to give my buddy Otto who makes the things some good hearted abuse about his crappy product and he told me to use alcohol instead.

I send a swab of WD-40 down the barrel as an oil. Never before have I heard that WD-40 causes rust.

This.

Isn't it called "Water Displacement -40" for a reason.

Don't think you want to use it exclusively, but I've talked to more than one gunsmith/repairman that have said it's perfectly fine.

This is what the folks suggested at a local gunstore.

I'll agree that WD-40 shouldn't cause rust, but I've seen it happen on two guns. Granted, one was kept in pretty harsh conditions without much TLC, but when I got the guy to switch to Rusteprufe, he stopped having those problems.

Was it a scientific test? No. Could there have been another reason? Sure. But was the issue cured when he switched? Yes.

Only bad thing with wd40 is that it is a penetrrant and if you leave a shell in the chamber it can work its way into or around the primer and ruin a cartridge( more of a pblm with a loded pistol for carry) lots better options out there for cleaning these days
