You should be able to smack a deer at 500 yards with a fixed 6X, 14X-20X is simply not needed.
If you bench test loads, 14X is plenty at 100 and 20X is not needed. With targets I designed specifically for the Conquest 3x9, I have been able to shoot 3 shot groups at 100 between .3"-.5" easily and have plenty of targets to back up what I typed.
The best deal in scopes is the Zeiss Conquest 3x9, 399.00 demo from Cameraland with a full warranty from Zeiss. Send it to Zeiss for target knobs, 120.00 for the pair or 60.00 for the elevation knob.
If you shop, you can find like new 3x9's for 300-325, I have bought three in the last six months.
Leupold has been plagued with issues the last ten years, optics are still nice but repeatability problems are well documented. I am not anti-Leupold, I have two now and will buy at least one more, an older Vari-X III 2.5x8; a situation where the size of even a 3x9 Conquest would be too long and the style not appropriate on a classic walnut and blue carbine.
The Vari-X III 2.5x8 is one of the finest scopes available before Leupold went crazy and tried to offer a scope for every possible market known to man and quality took a dive.
In the past I have not had the ability or desire to pay for a Nightforce, Khales or Swarovski. But I do have one all-weather rifle that I would not mind topping with the best of the best.
Of course, this is all my opinion and worth everything you paid for it. At least compare scopes side by side in the field and on targets to access the resolution and brightness. Shoot a four square to assess tracking. Don't be sold on opinions.
