Poison Ivy Strategery

I've got a wooded side lot that encroaches on the lawn and it's got a bunch of poison ivy in it.

In previous years, I would just walk through there and weed-eat the **** out of anything tall enough to stick out of the english ivy. However, 2 years ago I finally managed to sensitize myself and started getting little blisters on my shins after I'd weed eat in there.

Last year with the baby's birth and being basically a zombie the next six months, I just let it go wild and said F it. This year, I'm rueing that decision, as I have a BUNCH of poison ivy in there.

What is my best play here? I'm thinking of getting some Roundup Poison Ivy spray and just dousing the crap out of everything with three leaves, to hell with the collatoral damage. I also have a bunch of Tordon RTU, but that is mobile in the soil and requires a little more delicate touch in its application.

Can I just let the crap die and spray back any new growth I see for a couple years, or am I going to have to get my hands dirty and dig it out?

The boy is 1.5 and running all over the yard this year. By next year, I'm sure he's going to want to play in the woods, and I'd like to have the ivy gone by then if I can.

RoundUp Poison Ivy will work, but even once it's dead the oils will still be present and can cause reactions. Repeat as necessary, kill it when it's young and you will have fewer problems getting it under control.

This. Poison ivy is relatively easy to kill, as long as you use the correct chemical. Regular RoundUp, no matter what anyone tells you, will not kill poison ivy. You will likely get seedling and root sproutings for a while, but just stay after it and you'll eventually get rid of it. After you've sprayed it, leave it be, even if it looks deader than dead. And for the love of all that is holy, don't burn it.

Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

But short of that, spraying is the best bet. You'll be fighting it from some time, but it will eventually kill it out if you're diligent. And God help anyone who attempts to get rid of that stuff by digging it out.

Wear some pants and long sleeves and weed eat the f*** out of it. Then have the Round Up-PI ready to go and spray any new growth as it appears.

Ask the Agrinomist(TM) says ....

"No" to weedeating first. The easiest weed to kill is a healthy, happy weed. Roundup alone will not do it. You can mix a little "Weed-b-Gone" (just barely enough to tell it's there by color) with the roundup and do wonders - be sure to add a tablespoon of dish soap to every gallon or so of mix. There will be collateral damage to everything green it touches.

Goats!

A few years ago I asked my mom if she wanted anything specific for Mother's Day and she said yes, she wanted some goats. Goats? Yes, goats.

They had recently purchased a house that had very overgrown fencelines and she wanted to use goats to clean them up, plus she "the boys would like playing with the goats". My brothers are 5 and 7 at this point.

I kindly reminded her that if the goats are eating the poison ivy, their fur will be covered in the oils as well, which would result in two boys covered in poison ivy.

Goats were no longer pets for the boys. After a goat was found on the roof of her Tahoe, the goats found a new home.

Was hoping you'd poke your head in, B1-83. Your suggested plan of action will be PLAN 1A.

Off to Lowe's after work.

Hey 83, what concentration of glyphosate/triclopyr would you recommend? The "Recommended" application dosage or higher?

Tordon 22k will kill anything.

If you have any ammonium sulfate (21-0-0), add that to the mix as well.

For the most part, mixing Roundup stouter than label directions doesn't accomplish alot.

Tordon 22k is good stuff for this purpose, but picloram can be tough on non-targets in the residual aspect. I think if you just hold the jug in front of an oak tree it will die.

If the target plants are drought stressed, a little 21-0-0 (a pinch in a gallon of water) will kick up the activity.

I agree Tordon 22k will kill anything but it sounded to me like where he wanted to spray he had nothing to worry about. I use Tordon 22k at the ranch and it works well. I was mixing Tordon 22k and Vista together but now you can get them together and its called Surmount.
