I'm going to try and start a zoysia grass back yard where a dog stays... is this possible? Any pointers? Seed, plug, or sod? Any input will be appreciated.

What type of zoysia.
If you can afford it, go sod....especially if you're gonna try to establish with a dog back there.
Why zoysia?

Great thick grass----shade or sun. Good choice

don't do it. its not comfortable to sit on and if you ever change your mind you can't get rid of it.

personal preference, but my step mom "tried" some in a small section of yard and 30 years later its a pain in the butt.

Go sod---no choice

Where do you live? Zoysia is great for South Texas and the Hill Country because it requires less water than most grasses. It is fairly shade tolerant but not as shade tolerant as St. Augustine.
Turf Management was an awesome class.

More cold tolerant than St. Augustine in my experience.

Tolerates traffic very well. Sodding is really the only way to go unless you plug it really close. It takes forever to spread.

Again there are LOTS of zoysia varieties so it depends. I grew up with a zoysia backyard in the late 70s and early 80s and it was like walking on carpet...very comfy. By the mid to late eighties though, it was St. Augustine....that's what the neighbors had.

Now the thing that I call livin' is just bein' satisfied with knowin' I got no one left to blame

My house on our game ranch is surrounded by the jammer variety. Very nice and soft. Love walking on it. Just have to keep those pesky fire ants under control!

Well... this is in Longview, Texas that I'll be putting this in... Any recommendation on the variety type for this area?

dlance, that is a beautiful lawn... I'm not sure if I'll ever have it looking like that with my German Shepherd mixed mutt running around in back, but according to your pics, zorro looks like a good one...

Oh, and I chose zoysia because with the dog, this backyard is pretty high traffic. I sodded st. augustine 2 springs ago, watered the crap out of it, did everything I thought I would need to and it is all dead.

dlance-

St. Augustine typically wears pretty well with dogs - the exception being the paths they run every day. By the looks of your old yard, you had some chinch bug problems that probably contributed to the damage.

Anyway, the new yard looks great. I just installed a Palisades Zoysia lawn in my back yard & am looking forward to when it grows in.

Apache,

Damage was done during the dormant period. Zoysia holds up much better during this time.

That is exactly what happened to my St. Augustine!

Zorro and Cavalier are great choices. Both will give you a bad@ss lawn.

I think alot of how sod holds up depends upon how it was maintained & how the soil was prepped prior to installation. I've seen dogs trash Zoysia just like they did your St.Aug.

I also don't see how Zoysia could withstand your dogs digging holes in it better than St. Augustine. (Kidding!)

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned the fact that palisades zoysia was developed at A&M. It is not quite as soft as an emerald or similar, but still has a very nice feel and is also highly shade and drought tolerant. You can cut it with a rotary or reel. I have it and love it. It does great here in Austin.

recommendations on type of zoysia for DFW, and where to buy it?

Miller sells Palisades and Emerald. It's only sold by the pallet, and goes for $237.50, which covers 150 sq ft.

Any experts here who can comment on Palisades and Emerald? I know Palisades is a wider blade than Emerald.

Stay far, far away from Emerald. It grows agonizingly slow - you'll see still the individual sod squares months after installation. Go Zorro if you want thin-blade Zoysia. Jamur, Cavalier or Palisades for thicker blade types.

Doh!

I may want to go with zorro, because that supports A&M.
