I am sitting here in stunned disbelief... You are a lucky man in more ways than one.

That has to be one of the most impressive MOH Citations I have ever read. Men of that era were truly Men.

What has become of his medal?

That is one amazing story and an amazing rifle. I think I'd build a walk in vault with another safe inside to protect that thing.

Awesome grandpa and great heirloom.

Thank God for that generation of heroes. And our current one too!

Awesome!
What an incredible Man. The thought of the Men of that generation and what they did collectively and as individuals is very overwhelming sometimes.

Now try to 'collect' every animal on that rifle, with that rifle.

Take it out and shoot in on occasion so it still has the chance to tell it's stories. Few things in life are better than hearing and old man speak again.

Well put...that's definitely the plan

It's still in the same display that my grandmother is holding and hanging at my parents house

What a great story.

Make sure you have a secure place for that rifle. Bad things happen, make sure you have a fireproof & climate controlled place to keep it in, because that is pretty much the definition of irreplaceable.

Oh yeah, shrink resize and laminate the MOH narrative and put it under the butt plate. Time has a way of separating memorabilia from its history.

Seriously - I can't quit looking at that amazing rifle, especially with the story that goes along with it.

Like a Roger Creager song!

What a wonderful rifle, and what an even more amazing servant to this country!

Here I am at 29 years old and to think about what those men endured and for what they endured, and all at such a young age. Such courage and integrity. Unbelievable.

I would venture to guess to txaggie05, the gun is priceless. Thanks for sharing such an incrdible story. Think of the stories and memories you're going to get to share with your own son now.

That's a fantastic story. My father still has the 30-06 that my grandfather brought back from the WWII and he still hunts with it to this day. Many an animal didn't make it through the crosshairs of that 30-06. I have tried numerous times to get my dad a new gun to hunt with but he'll have nothing to do with it. He loves the fact that it was his dad's gun and he says that it "just feels right" when he's hunting with it.

As I can tell you already do, continue to cherish that gun and continue to tell his story. He's a true hero. I look forward to the day when my dad passes the gun along to me. And I look forward to sharing my grandfather's stories about it as well.

Thanks for sharing the story and photos. Indeed men like your grandfather seem to be harder to find and rarer as the years pass.

Here's to your story serving as inspiration to all of us and to finding more men like him when our country is again in need!

Great info on this site about him: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gaschley/medalofhonor.htm

He was presented with the Medal by a Major General at Ft Sam Houston in San Antonio while he was in the hospital there (Brooke). There is a picture at the bottom of the page. He also earned the Silver Star for action in Sicily, (there is a description of that action in the article), and two Purple Hearts.

There is some more info on the action that earned him the MOH there as well. Amazing man.

There's a reason Chesty Puller said he'd trade every one of his five Navy Crosses for a chance to earn a Medal of Honor. The medal and the men who wear it are arguably the most prestigious items in our countries history.

Very cool to have him in the bloodline and have his rifle. Congrats!
