I'm too busy and lazy to pull out the old turf books from school and it has been over 10 years but I got these small green almost translucent worms/catapiller looking things tearing up the St. augustine in my back yard. They are about an 1" long at the biggest and very small in diameter. Attached is a very bad picture but best my phone could do on this tiny guy.

What is it and how do i rid yard of it?

Thanks in advance!

Still pretty early for armyworms (fall army worm caterpillar) but it follows their MO - hatch out after a big rain and eat tender new growth.

A hefty amount of Sevin (carbaryl) is in your future. It takes a pretty high amount to kill armyworms... more than you would think. Follow label instructions. You probably should look for a wettable powder Sevin and spray it on.

If they are only eating in the sunlit areas and not in the shade, I would say you definitely have armyworms.

Saw a news story over the weekend that they were getting bad in Lago Vista. The country club lost a bunch of grass and had to reseed.

I don't remember cut worms being translucent but again it has been a long time.

Healthy dose of Sevin will happen tomorrow regardless.

thanks for the help.

Ask the Agronomist(TM) says .....

Sevin is quick, cheap, and effective. For a good organic alternative go for Bt ("Bio Worm Killer".
