Wow, that is a crazy story. It seems like they maybe weren't supposed to be fishing in that area, but still no reason to be shot at for over an hour!

Holy crap! With all of those shots fired, there has to be some evidence as to who the shooters were. No way they policed their brass and took all of their trash out of there... I hope these guys get caught and the full punishment coming to them.

Unreal. I don't think I would have called the wife though. Make it or not, she would have been panicked. Probably would have left her a message on my phone or on my work VM.

I would have been recording video as evidence. Even the sounds would be something, if the video was all dark and blurry.

Sounds like the local trash were out with a rifle, and decided to screw with a couple of fishermen in an extremely dangerous way.

Damn. Reminds me of the story of the couple and the river guide that were shot up at St. Elena Canyon years ago. At least these guys all made it out alive.

Not sure if it's the same story or not, but I read about a very similar story in the book "One Ranger". Husband was killed and wife and guide were shot up. Hope they catch these guys.

No, they need to be tried for attempted murder. And throw in the shots fired while the warden was there for a capital offense.

well, Labonte Park is the ONLY place where my vehicle has been broken into.

Cops did nothing......some real unsavory peeps frequent that area.

Reminds me of the horrible story in "One Ranger" by Joakin Jackson of the couple that were fired up on while rafting down the Colorado. Sickening....

I've met Kevin Mitchell a couple times. I can only imagine getting that phone call. Coming from Sinton, that would be a pretty decent haul to get there. Thankfully no one got hurt.

Heads up inside info.

So, I just got off the phone with a friend of mine that works for CBBEP and runs/maintains this exact property (and as I'm typing this, I'm thinking I shouldn't but I will anyway because this is still an active investigation.) He has been on the phone with Kevin Mitchell all morning and he is saying that TP&W is saying that this story is not adding up! Probably embellished.

He said that the Game Warden came through his gate and spotted with is night vison, as the article says and the only gun shots he heard were over a mile away. The Game Warden told him that it was so dark that night that there was no way that people could move that quickly and that far that fast. He also said that no spent brass has been found at the approximate site where the so called firing was done from. and said that even from the trestle bridge there would still be some around, not all of it would have fallen in the water.

So anyway, thought you guys would like a little inside info. on this story. He said he would let me know more on this situation as it pans out. He also said he is pissed because those two individuals did not have permission to be there in the first place.

And the plot thickens!!

If there was that much shooting around them, and they were not moving (huddled) then there should be lead in the bank and in the water.

Even if the people shooting were policing their brass, there should still be lead.

As I read the article the first time, I must admit that I had my doubts about it all adding up.

That being said, if the perps were firing at the two while they were on the phone with 911, then the reports should be clearly audible on the recording and as well as verified by the 911 operator.

Then again, why the frantic calls to the GW, making him risk his own life, if the two weren't being shot at?

Very strange indeed.

A quick check of Google Earth shows a road from a neighborhood that comes up close to the railroad tressle...

Sometimes, at night, on the water, with it quiet, you can hear quiet conversations a couple of MILES away. I could understand some people hearing shooting a long distance away, and it sounding much closer, and overreacting.

Sounds like they weren't shooting the rifles I hear about every day on Texags. Tack drivers with factory ammo at 200 yards. They shot 100 rounds and never hit anyone or either of the kayaks.
