Very true Sunchaser, one can be found guilty with no evidence at all.

SpiDer - batons are mostly found online, and the good ones run upwards of $50+ (but worth it)

Take a few classes on how to use them - much easier to use than a knife and much more effective. They are, however, also required to only be carried with a concealed license...as technically they are classified as a "club" and yes, they can easily render someone unconscious or even kill them. They are legit, so I'd look into classes so you don't wind up killing someone....but to disarm someone with a knife or a club, they can be devastating.

quote:
The expandable steel baton consist of several thick metal cylinders that fit inside each other. Each Cylinder is smaller than the previous and they can compact to a fraction of the expanded size. At the end of the baton there is usually a ball of metal to increase the weight at the end. This device is generally swung at an attacker to cause intense pain similar to being hit with a small metal bat. Common lengths of telescopic steel batons range from 16 to 26 inches.

FYI, collapsed, they are about the size of a small flashlight

hmmm...I'll keep that in mind. Thanks. I'm going to NOLA this weekend and don't want to get jumped too early..one of these days I'll get my concealed license.

Wait, so I can carry a collapsible asp if I have a CHL?

I wouldn't think so... you have a CHL, not a CWL.

collapsible baton

This is illegal! It's the same offense as carrying a cut down baseball bat with taped ends.

Are there any known laws on carrying a knife for protection?

Many scholars theorize that such laws exist, but I don't know that any have been discovered yet.

Don't gun manufacturers typically fire every weapon once before they sell it? Do they save the slug and casing?

Not sure about all manufacturers... but as an example, Ruger does fire all their weapons once before sales. However, the casing is provided with the gun... i.e.... you get it. Not sure the disposition of the bullet. But I highly doubt they keep them.

Take a look at an electron microscope view of a razors edge sometime. To the naked eye, it looks extremely smooth. Under the microscope, there are peaks and valleys and jagged edges. The same holds true for "identical" mass produced parts. From a macro view, they all look the same. But when you start looking at them in detail, there are details that differentiate them from each other. The breech/boltface leaves marks on the case head, the firing pins leaves marks on the primer, the extractor leaves marks on the rim, and the chamber leaves marks on the case walls. Find a gun that makes marks on a casing that matches one found at a crime scene, and you've got yourself a case.

The reason why the ballistic fingerprinting that lawmakers are proposing won't work is that it is very easy to change out parts on a gun. It leaves the factory, the buyer changes the firing pin, barrel, etc., and it will no longer match a casing that is stored in a database somewhere.

Carrying with out a license is illegal

Carrying a baton is illegal

Knife laws very by state

I would look into a taser and a CHL

Get a CHL. Louisiana has reciprocity with Texas.

How does the firing pin put a unique identifier? They are mass produced firing pins. Aren't they all identical?

They are mass produced, but machining and casting leaves what basically boils down to "fingerprints" on every surface.

Just like fingerprints, two can be very similar, but the chances of them being exactly alike are very close to 0.

Every pin strikes the primer differently, but fairly consistantly. For example, I have one shotgun that drags the pins on the primers after firing, so there is the dimple, and a scratch. Another just dimples the primer high and deep.

I can grab a handfull of spent shells and tell you which one came from which gun. While that doesn't proove that the shell was fired by that particular gun, it does proove that it wasn't fired by the other.

Evidence isn't generally about proving something happened, it is about proving enough didn't happen enough to figure out what did.
