SHTF battle rifle: scope or no?

I figure scopes are fragile enough that they're not worth it on your SHTF zombie killing rifle (all my bolt action hunting rifles are scoped, though). I took the M1A to the range and straight out of the box, every one of the first 60 rounds fired while I was sighting in would have dropped a man at 100 yards with iron sights.

What say you, OB, is a scope worth it?

Aimpoint 2x on mine. Not fragile at all. Works for our men overseas in the sandbox. Confident it would work here.

use whatever optic you want as long as you have a BUIS on it just in case something bad does happen.

When the batteries die, you can throw it at the zombies.

+1

Most tactical rifle schools have found that about a quarter of the way through the training, everybody ends up using iron sights. Even Trijicons, Eotechs, etc. will break. Batteries fail - and usually at the worst possible time.

I have a run of the mill Bushnell red dot on my AR, and one of these days I entend to put a BUIS on it, because two times I have been in a situation where the batteries died on me and the rifle became virtually useless.

I second the BUIS...

What I don't get from some posters elsewhere who somehow figure the trigger won't work with a busted scope... gun should still work, but be less accurate, right?!>!?!?

How well do you do shooting irons at night?

I have a 50mm Leatherwood red dot on my SHTF?zombie AK. I have it on a quick detach mount that I can easily remove in about 5 seconds. I debated long and hard about this and am generally in the iron sights camp.

You can hit a human silhouette at 500+ yards with iron sights on a good AR with decent ammo. I don't see much of an advantage using a scope, especially considering you wouldn't need to take a shot from that distance 98% of the time.

A red dot sight or even low power variable scope are going to be faster at close range, more forgiving of head position, and better in low light.

I'm speaking of some what ignorance because i've only used a red dot scope once. It was on my buddies m-16 in Iraq and I hated it. I guess I don't see the advantage you're speaking of. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I need an explanation on how it makes it/you faster. Thanks.

The reason I ended up going with the red dot is the AK's irons leave much to be desired compared to others like the AR.

It takes a step out of the process of aiming. You bring the rifle up, put the dot on the target, and shoot. With irons you have to line them up and focus on the front sight. A RDS also makes it much easier for most to shoot with both eyes open, causing the RDS tube or housing to turn in a ghost image that doesn't affect your field of view at all.

I'm sure there are other factors at play, but I can't really explain them, I've just seen the results for myself and will continue to reap the benefits.

The M1A has good iron sights. However, as was pointed out above, they will not help much at night.

SHTF and we're all going to be filling our smokehouses with game (and later, stuff considered not-so-much game). You'll want to keep your scope for that, right?

Not on a rifle, you don't.
