Need a new watch since my last one bit the dust. I was thinking about a Luminox, but wanted some other opinions. Need something durable, and I already have a dress watch, so this is for the field and the weekends.

What say you, OB?

I kept breaking the pins that hold the band on my Luminox. Finally just got a Casio G-shock and haven't been able to harm it for the last 2.5 years. Luminox gathering dust...

How do you manage to break pins in the watch and the Navy Seals can't? I have beat mine to hell and back hunting/fishing and have yet to have a problem.

If they aren't breaking pins, I'd be shocked. The flat edge of the watch hangs on stuff and the pin is the weak link. I have this one.

I bought this solar atomic G-Shock as a replacement and it is as indestructible as a watch can be:

I have used it fishing, SCUBA and skin diving, hunting, working with tools and equipment, etc. and can't hurt it.

Those Casios are tough SOBs. I had one for several years as my outdoors watch until I mistakenly left it in the public bathroom at Goose Island St Park one day after a post fishing trip shower. Went back 10 minutes later, and it was gone.

Casio G Shock, hands down the best.
I just upgraded to one of the analog versions.
I love it.

Citizens are pretty tough and the ecodrive will never need a battery. Seikos are durable as well. If you like the diver style:

Citizen Men's Eco-Drive Skyhawk A-T. Atomic and Eco-Drive so you never have to set it or repalce a battery. Mine's black and I get quite a few comments from the ladies.

I like this one, but you can get a luminox for the same money.

I got a Reactor watch last year and have been really happy with it. one of the big sell points for me was changing the springbar band attachment to a screwbar that is much stronger. I've always had bands break off, but this one is lasting and I wear it everywhere.

Springbars are the weak point of most watches,
so we eliminated them entirely. All our bands
attach via a solid, threaded screwbar, providing
at least a 500% to 800% increase in strength.

If you're wanting a Luminox but don't want it to be a piece of s**t....buy a Traser. Much better quality!

I have this one

I've been wearing this Casio Pathfinder Hunting watch for about a year and a half. I think it only cost me about $35. My old eyes need big numbers and this watch works for me. I get a lot of use out of the sunrise/sunset function and the moon phase information.

If you don't mind the size, go for one of the Casio Pathfinders in Solar Atomic. You won't have to bother with a battery or resetting it. They've got close to a dozen different models, all with various tools.

I have a Luminox. don't know the model, but I know it is not made anymore. Wife gave it to me as a wedding present in 2001.

It has the stainless case with the black numbered bezel, and rubber wrist band.

The watch itself is probably hands down the toughest watch I have ever had. It has spent considerable time in salt water, been scraped against hard rough objects, slammed into harder ones, and ripped off my wrist in various accidents. Worn daily since I got it. It just keeps going, and the lights still are bright.

The rubber wristband is the weak link. I am on my third one. The rubber "end" keeper loop goes first, then the band splits where the the latch grabs it. A #113 buna o-ring makes a great keeper ring, better than the original.

I would have switched to the velcro closed woven band, but due to friends comments, the smell over time would not be worth it.

I would buy another one, when it's time to.

I second Lonestar's suggestion. Google "Seiko orange monster."

Mechanical, self-winding, waterproof. Dial glows. Can function as both casual and dressy. Even though big and somewhat heavy, not been a problem at all. Had mine for years.

2 friends have actually bought the same watch (ebay) after seeing mine.

got a casio forester some years back. for hunting etc. fairly good choice. alarm for waking you up, backlit when its dark-the backlight is bright enough to help you see a few feet in the dark. Also has barometer trending which to my surprise almost always shows when its going to rain, even when forecast doesn't call for rain. some of the other watches above are nicer looking though. sorry i dont have pic but it is similar to g-shock in appearance.

I have a citizen eco-drive I've been wearing for the past 4 years. It's been beat up pretty bad hunting-fishing-working-swimming and still looks like it did the day i bought it. Except for the leather band is worn. Not sure which model it it but it is titanium

I have had my Luminox with a stainless steel band for 6 years and it still works great. I had a G Shock before and kept breaking the bands.

Another recommendation for G-Shock. I've got the GW6900, which is an atomic solar, so I don't have to set it and it doesn't need a battery. You can find it online (amazon is where I got mine) for about $90.

My dad is tough on watches and he hasn't been able to destroy his G-Shock, which is why I decided to get one. But I'm nowhere near as bad on watches as he is as I'm a watch guy and see them as something other than a watch.

Another G-Shock that gets a lot of attention for being tough would be the Mudman. It's huge and will set you back a couple of hundred dollars.
