How do you let your dogs ride in the truck?

Where do they ride?

My lab rides shotgun in my single cab, unless someone else is riding with me. In that case, the kennel gets loaded and she rides in the kennel in the bed.

What got me to think about this was that my dog was riding with me and I had to make a quick stop for some jackass that pulled out in front of me. My dog went forward and ended up kind of standing up with her front feet on the dash.
Had it been from a higher speed, or had I actually hit the car the dog could have ended up hitting the glass.

So what do yall do?

Both in kennels.

FWIW, remember it is illegal in Texas to travel with an unsecured dog in the bed. Gotta chain that mutt.

If I am by myself he is in the passenger seat sitting. Others riding along he is in the back set on his pillow. Long trips, he lays with his head on the center consul.

In the bed. without any harnesses, ropes, ties. I tell her to load up, she does. and she stays. I can walk in to a gander mountain for an hour and she wont move. Total instinct too! Unless its hot as poop outside, or raining, then ill let her in the front passenger side floor (she stays there).

Its great when you have a smart dog that understands that jumping out a vehicle at 50 mpg is not good.

Our old dog learned the hard way, he damned near strangled himself a few times as my dad tied him to the bed and jumped out, yeah at 70mpg on the interstate with a dog hanging out the bed is funny but not at the same time..

a few pics of my pooch ( "G" )

Shes a ****, but shes my bestest dog friend ever. im very strict with her though,

was my co-pilot in my old truck, not so much in my new one.

Duck rides in the bed of the truck 90% of the time. If we're taking a long ride he rides in the passenger seat.

Mine only rode inside. Only other thing I would have done is in a kennel that is secured to the bed.

Every day I go to work there is at least one dead dog on the side that has fallen out of a truck. Think about your pet on the side of the road squished into just a pulp of blood and guts nothing more than a stain on the road...

Here's an article from a San Antonio paper.

quote:
We see it everyday people letting the dog stand in the back of the truck while the owner is driving down the road. Fido will be fine and nothing will happen to him.

Today while driving down 281 towards the Alamo Dome, as traffic was flying around one of many deep curves, a beautiful black dog (I think Lab) fell from the back of a truck bed with a force that threw him into the middle of the freeway. I barely missed him and I was in the 2nd inside lane. I couldn't do anything to help him. Had I tried to get over or stop, we would have had a horrid traffic pile up and people would have been seriously hurt or killed. Instead this beautiful animal is dead because the owner was driving with the dog in the back of the truck

Everyday I see some idiot driving down the road 75 mph and the dog is hanging on in the back of the truck. When I see things this irresponsible, I pray the animal will make it home alive. When I see people this stupid and irresponsible, I also have to think they treat their kids and family no better.

PLEASE!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!! Do not put the dog in the back of the truck. If you want to take him somewhere, put him INSIDE the truck. Or please leave him at home.

I don't know if there is a law against animals riding in the back of a truck. There is one for people. If there is not a law for animals, I will work to get one passed with a hefty fine. I love dogs and cats as much as I do kids. I pray I don't ever have to see something like this ever again.

Passenger seat when im alone and in the bed all other times. The dog has been riding in the bed for 11 years with no problems.

In the backseat of our truck, with the seats down. Only time they are allowed in the bed of the truck is when we are going 1/2 block down to the river, or at the ranch. Had my golden fly out of the back of the truck once- never again. I have a seatbelt for one of them if they do happen to ride in the front seat.
MouthBQ98

In the cab. One of them usually climbs into the front seat if it is unoccupied.

In the back with the seat folded up. Has the whole back seat area to move around in, usualy he ends up with his head on the center console.

Kennel in the bed.

IMHO it is safer for a dog to be in an anchored kennel in the bed than loose in the cab of a vehicle. At least if they are in a kennel they will be somewhat contained. In the event of a rollover the cab will take a lot of the force whereas if they were loose they could get thrown around the cab like a ragdoll.

If he's loose, he wants to be in your lap. So he gets strapped in the back seat and pouts.

I saw a dog fall out of the bed of a truck going 60 mph on 2818 a few weeks ago. It was traumatizing to witness. Luckily the owner saw it and turned around quickly. When the dog finally stopped rolling and bouncing down the shoulder of the highway, he sat there, unable to move, but had his head up. Laugh all you want at our little doggie seatbelt, but I never have to worry about him falling out of the bed of the truck, or crawling around in the cab causing me to have an accident.

I have wondered about those seatbelts Twix.

It has always been a concern of mine that with so many idiots driving around, I would get in an accident and the dog would get hurt.
Twix

That was our main reason for getting it. Our beagle is clingy and likes to be near one of us almost all the time. When I'm driving by myself and I have him with me, he gets buckled in the front seat. When it's both my husband and myself, he goes in the backseat. He doesn't enjoy the harness, but he gets used to it. I just feel so much better knowing if we get in an accident, he's not going to fly through the windshield. He's protected around his chest, so he should be fine (his neck wouldn't be snapped if he were restrained by his collar).

Because we clip the harness to a seatbelt, he has a little room to move. He can stand, sit, and turn around. Sometimes he gets really pouty and stomps around in circles and gets his harness twisted up pretty good. Depending on my mood, I'll loosen it up for him.

Wadd,

Could you be so kind as to provide a link to this law? I am not saying it doesn't exist, but I have been unable to locate it so far.

All the dogs I have ever had have ridden in the back of the truck in the bed. Never had an issue of one of them jumping out.

If we are just going to town or to the vet or something like that they ride in the bed. If we are going on a long trip they ride in the cab. We never have owned a kennel.

my guess is the vast majority of them were on the ground to begin with and ran out into traffic
AgBrad08
How long do you want to ignore this user?
my concern isn't so much the dog jumping out.

A smart, well trained dog can be taught not to jump.

Its slamming on the brakes or a hard swerve to miss something or a wreck that is what concerns me. Any of those could throw your dog out of the bed.
powerbiscuit
How long do you want to ignore this user?
probably not, unless the truck is rolling
Beckdiesel03
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I love the seatbelt that we have, its very similar to the one posted above. And if you think your dog wont fly out of a truck because he is trained your an idiot. Think about all of the idiot drivers on the road.
