Anyone have any thoughts on what issues surround either or these two guns?

What should I be thinking about if I was to seriously think about getting one? Thanks

I love my 1944 Underwood Carbine.

I'd get the carbine 1st. Great little plinker and home defender if needed.

The M1 Garand was described as the single greatest war implement ever created by Gen. Patton. My vote is with the M1.

If you look online you can find them at various places. The issue for me is that there is such a wide variation in prices, whether new or old, I am just not sure where to start my research.

But I think ill start looking at the garand.

Garand. Dont even think twice.

Ammo is an issue for the Carbine, and mags areent cheap either. 30-06 is not a problem and if you want to hunt or use it as a defense rifle, well there is no comparison.

The Carbine is just too limited in use and application. Its light, its handy, but thats about it.

Best quality and price is from Uncle Sam. Google CMP and read the info there. If you need some help with club membership or any other questions, let me know.

Of course the best answer is...get both!

The absolute best value is buying through the CMP http://www.thecmp.org/. You can get either rifle through this program - its a little more effort and time, but well worth it.

As far as actual issues with either gun - once you realize how fun they are to shoot you'll never think of it, but the Garand is a little pricey to shoot, and some people worry about M1 thumb.

M1 Thumb? Dang I must be getting old or you all are just that green...

If you can close a car door without slamming your hand in it you can fire an M1.

The only issue I have with my M1 is the fact that I didn't buy through the CMP, and looking back realize that I overpaid - at the time I just wasn't patient enough to wait.

And anyone actually concerned about M1 thumb probably isn't man enough to be shooting one in the first place.

Garand. I'm kind of biased.

I'm seriously considering selling one of my rifles and buying a garand.

Garand, in the words of George Patton "it's the greatest battlefield implement ever devised."

Garand. Period. 30-06 vs. an over-glorified pistol round. No contest.

Service Grade. Springfield or H&R, doesn't really matter, since they will have been rebuilt at some poitn and have a mixture of parts from either SA, WRA, HRA, or IHC.

I have found the carbine to be a simpler gun to "get to know." It's also vastly superior for novice shooters (no recoil). Action is less intimidating. Easier to unload for travel. I think of it as a pistol with a stock.

That said, the carbine's applications are more limited; it lacks reach. I've also never seen a "National Match" carbine. The ammo is less available than surplus '06. It lacks "punch;" I wouldn't hunt pigs with it. If I knew trouble was coming, I'd take the Garand. If I didn't expect trouble, I'd choose the carbine.

You don't have to choose one. Buy both, but buy the Garand first.
