Looks to me like you can use whatever magazine you want.

Under Texas Law, the only hunting weapon that has a magazine restriction is a shotgun used to hunt migratory game birds. There are no magazine restrictions on rifles used to hunt game animals.

I think that people see many popular bolt action sporting rifles have a 5 round magazines, (probably because their military predecessors did, like the springfield, Mauser, etc.) and presume that there is some regulatory rule.

In some states with a lot of anti-gunners, they probably did set the upper limit at 5 in the magazine as another way to discourage detachable magazines and semiautomatic rifles, but Texas has no such limit.

IF I hunted with my AR, I'd probably use a 10 round magazine, just to keep the magazine out of the way and keep the center of gravity closer to the barrel.

I hope to God that your friend hasn't sporterized a G43.
