anyone have any favorite spots to drive in, camp, and hike the mountains?

If you're looking for more recreational camping, just about anywhere is Ark. is going to be awesome. I really like Lake DeGray & Ouachita State Parks.

Hell yes. One of my favorite camping spots of all time is Buffalo Point, Arkansas on the Buffalo River. It may not be the length you're looking for but the elevation changes and scenery aer fantastic. The 2 main trails are the Bat Cave trail and an Indian Cave trail, both ending at cool underground cave sites.

Petty Jean Mountain is also something you may be interested in. Either way, finding hiking trails in the Ozarks is pretty easy. Those are just 2 of my favorites.

Doesn't matter, I will never go in deep country because of that movie. Although it would be cool to shoot people with a bow

Toad Suck State Park just a little while northwest of Little Rock. Backpacking there may not be good, but at least you can say you hiked the Toad Suck. Looks like they may have some good fishing there.

and for the original poster, My wife & I have camped at the Diamond Crate state park in AR as well as the Ouchita state park. Pretty good fishing at lake Ouchita and you can dig for diamonds at the Diamond Crater state park. We did not do any hiking but there were trails in the area. AR is a pretty state and their state parks are much nicer and cleaner than ours here in TX.

AR also has part of the state sales tax that goes to supporting their parks that isn't used to balance the checkbook (unlike their large neighbor to the southwest).

hawksbill crag is a good day hike, only about 6 miles round trip i think, I did it on new years day when the high was 30, made for some very cool frozen waterfalls, also there is an elk herd in that valley, they claim the only one east of the Mississippi. I have also been to the buffalo river, lots of fun, fishing is better on the white though.
