How long do you want to ignore this user?
I am looking at buying a "GSP" puppy in a few years when I get out of school and I was wondering if anyone knew of a good breeder in state that isnt to bad on price and has a good track record. I just wanna make a few contacts so when I get ready to buy I have a few people to go look at.

Good choice with the GSP! Mine is probably the most affectionate dog I've ever owned.

Wish I could help with a breeder, but I got mine from an "accident" litter. Someone let this guy's huntin' dogs out of the kennel and he ended up with puppies. Saw them in the Classifieds for $150 and she was too pretty to pass up!

There's a Techster who frequents this board (raiderinarizona or raiderjay maybe?) who is a BIG GSP guy. I'd be willing to bet he can point you in the right direction.

Good luck, they are gorgeous dogs and even more beautiful to watch work!

this is where my dad bought his a few years back. She is a great hunting dog and even a better family pet.

Do yourself a favor and get one!

I have had good luck with this site. I have purchased two pups from different breeders and got great dogs.

There are some really good GSP threads on this board. Search for them.

You cannot find a better more biddable dog than a Shorthair. Eager, easy to train, and a great family pet. And they will hunt anything that you introduce them two. Natural retrievers and great pointers.

My Trudy is a great dog, but she's a handful. She's good at embarassing me when we're out in public, even after I spent a small fortune training her. She's definitely smarter than I am and stubborn as all get out. But I love her.

I got her from a breeder on a recommendation from killerK.

That being said, I'll give her to you for $3 and a case of beer.

My pup out of that litter was alot smarter than me too. But he dang sure could hunt. And was the best house dog I ever had.

Trudy is still wild as hell. She only obeys commands when she wants to. Walking her is a daily challenge. Actually we haven't had a walk in about a month (which probably has aided to her wildness lately). But it looks like she has recovered from her knee problems so I think today we are going to start walking again. I'm NOT looking forward to the challenge of retraining her to walk on a lead.

For all of that, I can tell she still has good hunting genes in her. She'll point squirrels or birds in the backyard. I can tell it bothers her to hold her point as I'll watch her just quivering waiting to take off after them.

Get an e-collar and the video. You can train basic obediance with it. Usually just the beep will get them to turn around. Or light stimulation will also get their attention, then move back to the beep. And before long they will come on command.

Rick Smith also has great videos on training.

She should have grown out of the wildness already. Her mother was a little high strung also. I am sure that is where she gets it.

Glad to see we'll have another proud GSP owner on this board! I got my dog from Double Barrel Bird Dogs in Ennis and I absolutely love that dog. He's my first and he's been great. There is a kennel near Seymour that supposedly has great dogs, called Wildrose GSPs. I think AggieTrigger has a dog up there right now, being finished up. If I were you, I wouldn't rule out buying a plane ticket for that pup and getting a dog from outside of TX. I think some of Killer's dogs came from Kansas. Dennis Brath at Cadens Kennels in Wisconson has outstanding dogs. Garbonita in Mohave Valley, AZ has awesome shorthairs. Get on the NAVHDA site and go to the contacts list. Call those folks. I did when I got my first pup and they were all great people and more than willing to help. Be prepared to answer some questions like why this breed? Do you intend to hunt this dog? etc., but overall they just wanna help. Here is an old pic of my dog, Raider.

EDIT: Sorry it's so dang big!

Raider-

Trigger and I both have pups from Dove Flats Kennel in Kansas. They are both great dogs.

Rose Kennel in Seymour is a class place. Charlie will not sell you a dog without being interviewed. If he does not think he has a pup to meet your personality, then he will not sell it. Really good guy to talk to about bird dogs.

Kiser-

When you get ready for a pup, get back on this board. I am sure one of us can find you a good one.

I rescued mine from the North Texas GSP Rescue. He won't hunt since he's gun shy, but I love him just the same.

Ryn,

That picture brings back so many great memories. Your pup looks like my Pearl dog. She was the first GSP that I had. Their heads and color are identical.

I don't know who brought the first Shorthairs to the US. But there should be a statue of him and his dog somewhere!

I have two GSP's and they are the most wonderful dogs I have ever owned. I'm an avid quail, duck, and pheasant hunter and you can't go wrong with them at all. One of mine is getting up there in age, and I'm thinking about a GWP (German Wirehair Pointer) so I can duck and goose hunt him longer into the season. Anyone know any good breeders? I'm talking to Three Devils Kennels in Nampa Idaho now, but willing to look at others.
I competed in a NAGDA hunt test with my puppy (20 months) this weekend and took home first in the open division. I'm not really a "hunt competetion" type of hunter, but there wasn't many wild birds out there this year on our leases. I bought him from Sequoia Kennels just outside of Fresno, CA. I would buy another one from him in a heart beat. Just do your research before you buy one. Interview the breeders just as much as they interview you!

Everyone is dead on...there are also some great bird dog forums that have some outstanding breeders on them. Killer is right about Charlie with Wild Rose and will not sell you a dog without interviewing you and pairing you up with the best one that suites you. If he doesn't have one that will he will tell ya. My little girl will be there at the end of March to finish up her training. She has one heck of a nose and is one great house dog. Good luck and enjoy the search that is part of the fun. I mean how can you not have fun looking at puppies.

Pretty good forum about GSP's. There are some people that are WAY into their shorthairs.

Streetfighter's GSP is about the best GSP I have been around. I usually don't like them because they can be so crazy and all over the place but his is great. I had one in my house that ran into a wall so hard with his head that he dented the sheetrock.

Kiser,

One more thing...if you are really serious about getting a GSP. One of my buddies in Tucson is a registered quail guide, Tri-Tronics/Purina rep, and has 10 of these beautiful dogs. He's got contacts all over the country. I'm goin' through him to get #2 when that time comes. If you wanna shoot me an email at nathanhenry81 at gmail dot com, We could talk and I'd be happy to put you in contact with him. He's a retired Army Lt. Col. and one of my favorite people.
