Be careful what you wish for.

I rarely see a whitetail anymore. The axis have taken over.

Not sure I see a problem here...

I killed this one at a corn feeder in the Hill Country.

any tips for attracting Axis?

and are axis harder to kill with a bow than whitetail?

we have quite a bit of axis on our place and I see much less as a bow hunter than every gun hunter.

I only have 2 stands so it could just be that im in the wrong area. Just curious.

My parents have a place near Leakey and although we can't hunt on it (legally) there is a huge herd of Axis deer with the daddy male has an absolutely beautiful coat and horns at least 3' in length or more. Similar to this one, but older so darker coat around neck and back. Would shoot him if I could.

But they do seem to be multiplying faster and see less and less whitetail. Rarely see any whitetail bucks. We throw out apple corn, apples, leftovers and the whitetail will come eat it every time. Axis stay away and graze in next field and their movement is like clockwork. Big bucks right before dawn, then herd a few minutes later, move from cover to fields during day to graze and then river to drink, and back to cover at night spending last hour in same field. Trying to get in touch with Harrison Ranch next door about leasing a few acres to hunt next to ours, but no luck.

Alfalfa works great.

I would never pass on an Axis deer. They are an invasive species. Kill them.

This ^

But to your original question, axis tend to be more skiddish than whitetail because they're hunted year round.

I would bet you're not seeing as many because your closer to the feeder and the axis are picking up on your scent or hearing you come into the area moreso than the rifle hunters.

And another that always annoys me about people talking about axis is the myth that they breed twice a year....

Their gestation period is 210-238 days. They don't produce two fawns a year.

Edit: unless they have twins

Don't forget - you can shoot them at night legally

Axis is some great tasting meat, prefer it over whitetail any day. As far as getting them in for a kill, food plots are great, they love winter oats we planted. They are also considered feral and have no season, which also means that you can technically hunt them after normal shooting hours.

That's a really great question mate. From my own experience i find corn to be the best way to attract axis deer

Axis like the same things as WT. Protein pellets, corn, peas etc.
We mix some sweet feed (horse and mule) with some corn and pellets to attract them.
Fresh leafy alfalfa works well.
Food plots with oats and wheat and turnips.
Apple and molasses flavored mineral blocks.

Sure can. But you are going to draw a GW during WT season.

I guess I don't understand the point of an ai bot bumping threads. Unless there is malware in the link or something?

Blackbucks have a 5.5 month gestation period, so they are usually dropping two fawns per year. They will overpopulate in a hurry. The only positive is that if they find a field which has Jiggs bermuda in it, they will spend 95% of their time there. I am not a fan of BBs

Even better, a 15 year-old thread.

Probably trying to drive traffic to a website or generate "interest" (ie clicks) for money.
